Travel Photography Scholarship Frequently Asked Questions

Quick Links to commonly asked questions about:

Eligibility

1. How old do I need to be to be eligible for the scholarship?
You need to be over 18 at the time of the application deadline (before December 14, 2016).
2. Am I considered a professional photographer?

We appreciate that the photography industry is difficult to break into and there are a lucky few who can count themselves as professional full-time photographers. This scholarship is very much about the mentorship opportunity, and the judging panel will be selecting the person who they feel will most benefit from the learning opportunity. So, if you currently make more than 25% of your income from ANY photography activities, you are not eligible. You will be asked to outline your experience to date in the submission process, and it will be the judging panel who decides who is most suitable based on their photos and written component.

3. I speak very little English. Will this be a problem?
English does not have to be your first language, but you do need to have conversational English for this scholarship. In order for you to get the most of the mentorship you will need to be able to understand and converse with your mentor, Richard, on the trip.
4. Do I need a current passport? What about visa requirements?
You need a current passport with at least eight months left before expiry. We'll assist the winner in acquiring a visa and reimburse all associated costs, however the applicant must be eligible to obtain a Japanese visa.
5. I am Japanese. Can I apply for this scholarship?
Yes, of course our friends from Japan are eligible too!

Application

1. Can I enter more than once?
No, you can only submit one application.
2. Can a pair or team submit an application?
No, each photoessay must be submitted by an individual photographer.
3. Do photos need to be taken with somewhat professional-grade camera equipment?
Camera equipment does not matter at all! Submit what you think works best as it's all about the image! Have a look at the winning photographs of our previous photography scholarships and see how your photos compare.
4. Do the photos have to be from a singular event / place / time?
The images do not need to be sequential from an event, and yes they can be a combined over a period of time. However, please remember every image must tell a story and THEN the images must work TOGETHER to tell a story about a PLACE you have visited. Five great stand-alone images will not win the Scholarship (especially if they are all from different places!). They must represent one place you have visited.
5. What do I need to include in the captions?
You do not need to write an entire story, just give the photos context and a bit of background. 1-3 sentences for each caption should suffice. You MUST include a caption for each image (see the Judging Criteria below). DO NOT use the Essay to tell us about your images! Images that do not have a caption will receive a score of zero for this component.
6. What do I need to include in the essay?
The Essay is your opportunity to tell us about yourself, it's the easiest part of the competition! Tell us about YOU, what you hope to gain from the experience and what you hope to contribute back to the greater community through your photography. If you like even tell us why you think you should win but really this is about us learning about you and your photography. DO NOT use the essay to tell us about the images in your application, that is what the Captions are for. If you use the Essay to tell us about your entry you will be penalized! See the Judging Process below.
7. How long does the essay need to be?
The Essay should be no longer than 1500 characters. Yes, that's characters not words. You will not be able to submit your application form if your essay is any longer than this.
8. Is it acceptable to enter an image that was shot in color but converted to black and white?
Yes it is acceptable to convert a color digital file to black and white but process the image carefully as over-treated black and white is as unacceptable to us as over-treated color. It will not negatively affect the chances of an image winning.
9. What resolution do you recommend for my photos?
We suggest a resolution of 72 ppi/dpi and a pixel length of at least 960 pixels of the longest length of the image. The file size of each photo must not exceed 1MB.
10. Are HDR images acceptable?
No, we do not accept images created using HDR techniques. In addition, compositing and multiple exposures are not allowed. Sandwich shots, double exposures, photographs which consist in any way of more than one separate image and images that have been digitally manipulated are not eligible.
11. Do I have to submit RAW files?
For the shortlisted entries, we will be asking for your RAW files to compare with your submitted files. If you did not originally save your images as RAW files, or no longer have them, an untouched JPEG file would suffice - but only if it was not processed.
12. Can I submit pictures that I've submitted for other photo contests?
Yes, you can. Provided you still have the rights to use the image.
13. Where can I find winning photo essays from previous Travel Photography Scholarships?
Take a look at the links on the bottom of our opportunity page for information of previous winning and shortlisted applications.

The Judging Criteria

Please read this carefully before submitting your application for the best chance of success.

1. The judging panel will be looking for a series of images that:

  • - Are clearly considered
  • - Well executed
  • - Work together to tell a compelling story

2. The images should:

Reflect your unique perspective on your chosen place and subject
What is it about this story that caught your attention? What makes your story original?
Be technically proficient
The subject should be sharp, unless deliberately blurred for effect, and correctly exposed to convey the mood, quality, and feel of the story.
Be creatively composed
Compose for impact making sure there is a clear point of interest and that all the elements in the photograph are considered in relation to this.
Use light to enhance the subject and composition
The color, quality, and direction of the light should enhance your subject and focus the viewer’s attention on the point of interest.
Be un-adulterated
We want to see a true representation of the images that you captured in the field. So keep your digital adjustments to the absolute minimum - we can and will be able to see through any unnecessary enhancements. Bear in mind also that we will also ask for your original RAW files should you be chosen as a finalist, and you will be penalized for excessive changes to your original images.

3. You will also be judged on your:

Photo captions
Make sure that each image has a caption that provides some information about the frame. The captions for your photo essay should tell the viewer a story when strung together.
Personal essay
Tell us what winning this scholarship would mean to you and why we should choose you. You must be eager to learn and convey what you hope to get out of the mentorship experience

The Trip

1. What are the trip dates?
The scholarship trip will commence on February 10 and end on February 20, 2017. The winner must be available for the full duration of the scholarship and allow between 1-2 days on either end of the scholarship dates to travel to and from Japan.
2. What will I have to produce from my trip?
You will work through a specific shot list of 100 photos that will be commissioned by the scholarship partners as part of your assignment.

On your return you will work with Richard I'Anson through the editorial process to shortlist your top photographs and color balance to achieve professional looking shots.

You will also keep a daily diary about your time on the trip and upload this plus pictures you've taken to your World Nomads travel journal.

3. Are the trip dates final or could they be altered a little?
Yes, these dates are final.
4. What will the mentorship entail?
Everyday you will work alongside Richard I'Anson to gain invaluable mentoring and hands-on experience in everything from shot set up, technique and composition through to insights into his many years of diverse experience as a travel photographer and Canon Master.
5. Will I need to bring my own gear? If so, what gear do I need to bring?
Yes, you will need to bring your own gear. DSLRs are preferable, point-and-shoot cameras and iPhones are less preferable - simply because you are limited in what you can do with them. However, if you are able to demonstrate you have an excellent eye for a story and an excellent grasp of visual language, we will look past gear limitations.
6. Can I bring a travel companion or my partner along for the trip?
Only the winner will be allowed on assignment. Should the winner wish to extend their stay in Japan after the assignment, this can be discussed.
7. Is there any other way to get into the program besides the scholarship? Can I pay for my room & board myself and take part in the program?
No, unfortunately, you cannot pay your way onto this trip.

Troubleshooting

1. Help! I have a problem submitting my application. Can I email my application to you?
No, you cannot email your application to us. All entrants need to fill the application page and submit their applications via our website.

If you have encountered any specific issues please contact us at [email protected]
2. I'm not sure if my application was submitted correctly. How do I check this?

3. Can I edit my application once submitted?

Could I use photos that I took by a film camera? and could I use only film camera if I would go to Japan?

Yes, you can submit images taken with a film camera, however the same post-production guidelines apply. The faithful representation of what was captured at the time of the shot being taken must be maintained.

When you say " 1500 characters," when writing the personal essay, does that include spacing or without spacing being counted as part of the 1500 characters?

Yes, the 1500 characters includes spaces.

  • Mathilde said

Is the theme of the report free? Or is it necessarily about people? (I would do on animals)

Your photo essay must be about a place you have been. You can include people, landscapes and animals in the images as long as each of the 5 images work together to tell a story about the place

    - Pari, World Nomads

  • Mel said

Do all the photo entries become the property of worldnomads or do entrants retain copywrite ownership?

Hi Mel, by submitting your application you grant WorldNomads.com a non-exclusive licence to use your images on the WorldNomads.com website and social channels in promotion of the photography scholarship.

Am I allowed to use photo taken with smartphone and postproducted with simple apps like "retrica" ?

Yes, you can submit images taken with a camera phone and post-produced on using mobile software. However, digital adjustments must be kept to a minimum. We will not accept images created using HDR techniques. Should your photo essay be shortlisted you will be required to submit an unedited version of your images to ensure you have maintained the integrity of the image.

I'm a newbie to photography and I don't understand the terms "RAW file" and "processing". What if I am unable to shoot in RAW and can only provide an untouched JPEG? How do I ensure it's not processed? It also seem that you need special software for RAW files? I have a Nikon D5200.

    Thanks in advance.

RAW image files, sometimes referred to as digital negatives, contain all the image information captured by the camera's sensor. Your Nikon does shoot in RAW format. Nikon calls this NEF format. Have a look online to learn how to adjust your settings to capture images in NEF format.

If you don’t have a RAW version of your images, an untouched version of your JPEG images can be provided if you are shortlisted.

hello, i readed in the rules of the contest some years ago that it's not necessary put 5 photos, but i couldn't find information about that for this one. If its better for the history, in order to make it stronger or whatever, In this application its possible to submit less than 5 photos? for example 3?

To be able to tell a story with a series of images you will need to submit a minimum of 3 images and a maximum of 5.

What should photos show exactly? Can I be on the photos showing my trip to e.g. Africa or it should present some story of the people living in the visited area?

Ideally, the image would give the viewer an insight into another place, its culture and environment. Have a look at the previous winner’s photo essays to get a sense of what the judges are looking for.

  • Isabelle said

Hello, am I allowed to resubmit a photo essay that I tried to submit a year ago but wasn't accepted?

  • Asher said

I made a photo essay last year that I'd like to submit. Can we submit photos from a past trip for the photo essay, or do they need to be taken recently/specifically for this application?

Asher, you can submit images taken from a previous trip. The images do not have to be taken specifically for this scholarship. However, they should meet the brief to be considered for the scholarship prize, i.e. they should work together to tell a story about a place you have been.

So my profession is a photographer, but I'm not a travel photographer whatsoever, so this would still be a awesome opportunity for me. I can see in the FAQ that it says professionals aren't eligible, but I don't see anything stating this in the official Terms and Conditions. Can I please have some clarity if I'm still eligible to apply or not?

Grace, as mentioned above, this scholarship is very much about the mentorship opportunity, and the judging panel will be selecting the person who they feel will most benefit from the learning opportunity. Hello,

I submitted my work a few days ago, but I had a connection problem and I'm not sure if you received it. I read on questions above that if one's work doesn't appear on the applicants list, is because you haven't received their application work.

I tried to search my application on the list and does not appear, and didn't receive any mail in regard of my application, so my guess is that it didn't make it due to the connection problem I mentioned. It'd be a shame that an internet connection error left me out of the competition.

My question is, how many days takes from a submission to appear on the applicants list?

Hi Josep, it looks like we haven't received your application. Your photo essay should appear in the list almost immediately. Please try to reapply if possible - you have 27 days!

    Hi there!

I turn 18 only five days after the deadline. How strict is the rule in regards to age at the deadline? Would an exception be a possibility?

Ben, when you participate in the scholarship you are accepting our Conditions of Entry which state that you are over 18 at the time of the application deadline. These terms cannot be changed.
But don't fret! It is very likely that we'll run this program next year and there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the year which you can be a part of.

    Hi

Are you essentially looking for younger people for this competition? I am in my 50s and have made some money in the past from photography but very sporadically and not for a few years now. I am at heart a travel photographer and even although I consider myself pretty proficient, I have never been able to make in roads into actually selling any of my images so I still feel that the mentorship would really benefit me. Should I still enter?

Hi George, there is no maximum age limit. We are looking for an aspiring photographer who will learn from this mentorship and would like to turn their passion for travel photography into their profession. If that sounds like you then I encourage you to apply.

    Hi,

I've got a question about travel insurance. Do I need to purchase it prior starting application or it's included in the prize and I do not need to be worried about it? Thanks

Hi Marjan. The winner will receive travel insurance from World Nomads as part of their prize. You do not need to organize this prior to submitting your application. Once the winner is selected, World Nomads will be in touch to organize travel insurance for the duration of the scholarship in Japan. If the winner is not eligible for travel insurance through World Nomads (for example, is above the age to be eligible for our policy), he or she will be responsible for obtaining his or her own travel insurance to cover all activities and will be reimbursed up to $200 USD.

Minimal cropping is allowed. Keep in mind, if you are a finalist and the original file is requested for comparison with your submitted image and you may be penalized for excessive cropping. We are interested in your ability to capture the image at the time, not find the perfect composition whilst sitting at the computer.

    Hello, just to make sure:

The conditions of entry state that "Your submission must not [...] contain unauthorized third-party trademarks or logos."

I imagine this means that if there is a fast food chain advertisement seen hanging on some tall buildings (included in the photo on purpose in order to make a point in comparison with the other photos), with the logo shown as well, I am not allowed to use that photo for the contest?

Would it be allowed to sort of blur out / censor the logo in order to be able to submit the photo?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hi Rebecca, thanks for your patience on this one. If the logos have been displayed in a public space it is fine to include them in your images. You do not need to blur or censor these before submitting your application. All the best!

I don't have DSLR or iPhone. I take photos with my oneplus phone. Can i take part in this with my phone.

Yes, you can submit images taken with a camera phone. To get the most out of your trip DSLRs are preferable, point-and-shoot cameras and camera-phones are less preferable - simply because you are limited in what you can do with them. However, if you are able to demonstrate you have an excellent eye for a story and an excellent grasp of visual language, we will look past gear limitations.

DSLRs are preferable, point-and-shoot cameras and iPhones are less preferable - simply because you are limited in what you can do with them. Hello, I have posted my question already 3 days ago, but seeing it was the only question so far left without a reply, I was wondering if it might have been overlooked, and I am reposting it, just in case.
In one of my pictures portraying the streets of a big city there is a board with advertisement - and the logo of a fast food chain on it - included in the photo. I do not intend to use this as advertisement for the fast food chain, nor is it mentioned in the caption. I am not sure if it is violating any rights to use this photo in the contest, but in combination with my other 4 pictures this photo works best to bring the desired message across. I am sorry for repeating my question, but it would be a real shame if I would be disqualified for including the logo, and if it might lead to problems I would try to use a different photo for the application.
However if there is a way to include the picture (digitally making the logo less visible? By e.g. enhancing a reflection partly covering it?) I would prefer including it over any alternatives, as it seems to round up the series.
This opportunity to win the scholarship is very important to me, and I don't want to be disqualified from the start over something so little, so please excuse my persistence with this question.

  • Serge said

Hello, a few questions if I may:

    1. Are there any age limitations for entering the contest? Say, one just turned 60, would that be fine?
    2. I don's shoot RAW, so would the original untouched JPGs be considered as a proof?
    3. I know DSLR is preferred. How about mirror less APS-C cameras?
    Thank you for your answers.

    1. All applicants must be over 18 years of age, there is no maximum age limit. The winner will receive travel insurance from World Nomads as part of their prize. Is it okay if I represent what I see and want to share in my own way. i already have 5 photos of nyc's chinatown that I would like to submit. However, I want to push myself and produce something else.

Can I put my own spin to it? Mix street, with portraits. I am not too sure what a photo essay is although all my photos have a story within themselves. If they're of the same, then they have a common theme.

Your application can include old images. However, you will need to provide the original (unedited) version of each of your images. If you cannot provide the original copy of your images, your application may be penalized by the judges in the final rounds of judging.

All the images you apply with should be captured by yourself.

    Hi Pari,

I would like to ask a few questions about the photos.

    1. About your reply to Vinay aradhya, what is the meaning of minimal editing? Can I crop these photos?

    2. If I entry the final-round judging, but I cannot supply RAW file for some of the photos, will it be a matter? It is because most of photos I have not saved as RAW format.

    Thank you very much!
    Alex

    1. We are interested in your ability to capture the image at the time, not find the perfect composition whilst sitting at the computer. So if you've cropped too much of the original image then you will be penalized. Small amounts of cropping are okay, but keep your digital adjustments to the absolute minimum - we can and will be able to see through any unnecessary enhancements.

    2. You will need to provide the original (unedited) version of your images. They can be untouched jpegs if you have not shot the images in RAW format. If you cannot provide the original copy of your images, your application may be penalized by the judges in the final rounds of judging.

Regarding not being allowed to make more than 25% of the current income from photography > I am a 2016 photography BA Hons graduate who is just about to try and start up my own business as freelance photographer. But I am not yet registered as a trader. But nor do I have another job in another field. Is there a lower limit for how much one is allowed to earn, or is the 25% rule all you go on? I do not yet earn enough for it to even cover UK minimum monthly living wage. But the small amount I do get is from photography commissions here and there. A scholarship like this could really boost my chances so I am eager to apply. Thanks!!!

Hi Charlotte, such a situation will be judged on a case by case basis. Seeing as you are still not earning a significant amount of money from your photography, I would recommend you apply for the scholarship. The judges will assess your case if your application reaches the final stages of judging.

Hello, I have a question about the images.
I made a selection of 5 images taken in a 200km trekking, the Manaslu circuit in Nepal, the images are from different places but narrate the all trip in the Himalaya.

Is it okay or is better to tell a story about a singular place like a village or a town?

Thanks a lot for your time.
    Regards.

Your story can be about a journey, community, or person in the context of a place. Sounds like you have a great story to tell! Looking forward to seeing your photo-essay.

As far as being considered a professional photographer is concerned... I make 90-100% of my income from photography. That being said, I'm still living at home and my total income isn't much. Is there a minimum yearly income that one needs to meet before that 25% income rule applies?
    Thank you!

Hi James, it sounds like your case would have to be reviewed independently by the judges. We don't specify a minimum yearly income, however, we also would like to ensure that the winner will be able to benefit from this learning opportunity. I'd recommend that you apply. If your application reaches the final rounds of judging the judges will be in touch to find out more about your situation.

On the issue of watermarks, I'm aware that you prefer photos with no watermark. However, almost all my photos have a watermark.
Does submitting a photo that has one lead to penalization?

If the watermark is fairly discrete you will not be penalized.

    Hello,
    Is cropping of photos allowed?
    Thank you!

Minimal cropping is allowed. Keep in mind, if you are a finalist and the original file is requested for comparison with your submitted image and you may be penalized for excessive cropping. We are interested in your ability to capture the image at the time, not find the perfect composition whilst sitting at the computer.

Another photo has my own shadow, Is removing it considered excessive editing, thanks.

This depends on how prominent your shadow is in the original image and whether you are lifting the shadow slightly or removing it completely. The judges will have to decide this upon reviewing your RAW images if your application is shortlisted.

    Hi,

    I had a few questions:

    1) I had been to Darjeeling in West Bengal & Pelling in Sikkim, both in India in one trip and earlier to Mashobra, Himachal Pradesh, India and it's surroundings on another trip to take photographs for this year's National Geographic Nature Photographer Of The Year and then eventually used the photos from the Pelling/Darjeeling trip for this year's Smithsonian.com's Annual Photography Contest. I used photos from both trips for the National Geographic Nature Photographer Of The Year 2016. My question is since Darjeeling and Pelling would constitute separate places but were done in one trip could they be clubbed together? Similarly since Mashobra and it's surrounding areas would be multiple separate areas but were done in one trip, could they be clubbed together? If possible, I was also considering taking a total of 5 images across both trips as they tell the story of trying out for the National Geographic Nature Photographer Of The Year 2016, which was ultimately not a successful attempt.

    2) In the rules & FAQs, it has clearly been mentioned that the person who submits the photographs should not talk about his photographs in the 1500 character essay but instead should describe this in the captions. But I consider the fact that I have tried out for these competitions to a critical part of the overall reason why I should be considered, and was wondering how could I say that without referring to the photos & without being penalised/disqualified. Your advice on this would be most helpful.

    Regards,
    Mahesh Shanker

    2) What post-processing is acceptable? Would cropping be acceptable?

    3) Possibly due to sensor dust, there is a small dot which is in a series of photos that I might enter. Can I remove this dot entirely using the cloning/healing tool or should I dodge or burn it to make it less prominent? Or is there anything else that can be done?

    1) Yes, as long as the images are taken in the same country and are used to tell a story about the place your application will be considered. The photo essays will be judged on the strength of the 'story' of the photos, including captions, so if you can't convey this through your captions it may affect how it is judged against the criteria.

    2) Use the captions to help the viewer contextualize the shot. All the captions should work together with the images to tell a story about the PLACE. Use the personal essay to tell us what you hope to gain from the experience and why we should pick YOU. You can mention that the images were taken for the National Geographic competition, but only if you have sufficiently answered the main part of the question.

    3) Yes, minimal cropping is allowed. Keep in mind, if you are a finalist and the original file is requested for comparison with your submitted image and you may be penalized for excessive cropping. We are interested in your ability to capture the image at the time, not find the perfect composition whilst sitting at the computer.

    4) You can remove the dot of dust with whichever means you deem appropriate. This would be considered minimal editing and will not be penalized for removing it.

I was looking for some photos I took at my country's Gay Pride Parade this year, but it seems I may have deleted them in order to make some space, so:
    1) Can I use the ones I uploaded in my own Facebook? None of them were edited in any way whatsoever.
    2) I know one can provide the original jpeg files, in case they are asked and one did not save the RAW ones, but I wonder how would you know they would be the original photos? I rarely edit a photo, so I would basically be sending you the same photos again, if you were to ask for them.
