The space facility was established in 1971 as one of the two rocket launch centres in India. The villagers, who now earn their livelihood through fishing and allied activities, claim they received a negligible compensation for giving up their land and no alternative was given for rehabilitation.

This was a holiday and a day of celebration, especially for women, as men in the neighbourhood were cooking together. The women, their heads covers, were happy to engage in conversations behind the compound walls while they kept an eye on the cooking scene at the same time.

The little ones pushed each other aside to get to the front of the pack to get pictures clicked. They would have been born at Nawabpet and possibly still oblivious to the hardships of their ancestors, who were left to fend for themselves because of India's ambitions in outer space.

It's business as usual for Chellaiah, a non-Muslim at Nawabpet. Though he is seen spreading the net, he is one of the few non-fishermen in the village and earns his livelihood primarily by climbing coconut palms; fishing provides for his subsistence.
