Leather is still tanned in stone vessels with softening liquids and dyes in much the same way as it was done centuries ago. After the hides have been soaked in a liquid mixture designed to clean and soften the hides, a tannery worker removes any remaining pieces of flesh with a long knife. A section of hide is scraped and then the hide is lifted from the pile and turned so the worker can scrape another section. Hides are manually dyed by a worker standing in a vat of dye. The hides are soaked in the dye vat and, when the dye has been absorbed into a hide, the worker lifts it out and shakes off the excess dye. The manager of the Fes tannery, sporting a bright blue polo shirt, stands in stark contrast to the two tannery workers he instructs. Finished hides are piled high and await transport. The finished tanned and dyed leather hides are bundled and transported out of the tannery by donkey, as motor vehicles are prohibited in the medina. A 21st century supply chain powered by 11th century methods.
