Does Bogota deserve its reputation as a dangerous city?

Colombia’s capital, Bogota, is a gigantic city of about 12 million people perched at an altitude of 2,600m, high in the Andes Mountains. Fortunately, for residents and tourists, Bogota is 350km from the border with Venezuela, along which terrorism, narco-violence, and human trafficking is rife.

This complex situation is highlighted by the Australian Government’s travel advisories for Colombia. While it ranks multiple parts of Colombia at level 4 – which means Do Not Travel – Bogota is only rated at level 2, which indicates it is relatively safe for visiting. However, Bogota still poses many risks to tourists, such as:

Fake taxis that are used to perform kidnappings, theft or robberies against unsuspecting foreigners.
Drinks being spiked with a drug that essentially turns the victim into a compliant zombie, who will blindly follow instructions.
Robberies by night and pickpocketing by day in busy areas of Bogota’s chief tourist precinct, La Candelaria.

How to avoid being conspicuous

One of the riskiest things a tourist can do in Bogota is to stand out from the crowd. While most travelers will avoid a city’s most dangerous neighbourhood or walking alone at night, many seem unaware their conspicuous clothing and behaviour can attract the attention of street criminals. Here’s five tips for remaining more anonymous in Bogota:

Avoid wearing clothes that are blatantly touristy: bright colours, brash patterns, or emblazoned with the names of foreign places like “Harvard” or “London”. Instead, blend into the crowd by wearing plain clothes in muted colours.
If using an ATM, or changing money at a currency exchange, make sure to quickly and subtly put all your currency in your wallet or purse, and tuck that in a safe spot, before you begin walking away. Bogota pickpockets are known to linger at such sites.
Reconsider your need to carry a selfie stick. No item screams “tourist” louder than this long, obtrusive photography tool. Instead, just do standard selfies, which are much quicker and more discrete.
In public, keep your valuables out of view whenever possible. Put your camera back in its bag once you finish shooting images, and don’t carry your phone in your hand when not using it.

Bogota nightlife

Bogota is infamous for drink spiking incidents involving a terrifying drug called scopolamine, which is very difficult to detect due to being flavourless and odourless. This substance puts victims into a waking, yet zombie-like state, during which criminals can easily get them to withdraw money from ATMs, or sexually assault them.
Bars and nightclubs in Bogota are known for having no-nonsense security guards, who have a short fuse when it comes to drunken or disrespectful behaviour. Tourists who misbehave in these venues may face swift, violent action.

Kidnapping is a threat

Express kidnappings are widespread in Colombia, according to the UK Government, which advises its citizens to be wary of these brief, opportunistic abductions. It warns foreigners are key targets of these kidnappings, which typically occur late at night, and involve a criminal posing as a taxi driver.

This person threatens their passenger with violence if they don’t either send them money online immediately, or accompany them to an ATM to make a large withdrawal. Although they normally release the abducted person soon after, sometimes the victim is beaten or murdered. Guerrilla soldiers and drug gangs also carry out many kidnappings in Colombia, but they tend to abduct wealthy locals more often than tourists.

Which forms of transport are trustworthy?

Picking the correct form of transport is one of the key ways to boost your safety while traveling in Bogota. The US Government bans its staff based in Colombia from riding motorcycles, hailing taxis on the street, or using any form of public transport. Here’s the lowdown on taxis, rideshares, buses and trains:

Given the aforementioned scourge of fake taxi kidnappings, it is advisable not to hop into a random taxi on the street.
Instead, use a ride sharing or taxi app, like Uber, Cabify, or DiDi. This offers you far greater safety, because the app lets you track your location, and discloses the identity of your driver. If you’re uncertain which app to use, get advice from the front desk staff at your hotel.
Bogota’s extensive Bus Rapid Transit system is hit or miss. Safety is reasonable on board the buses, but its stations are known to be laden with pickpockets and robbers.

Safety on mainland Ecuador

Unless they visit the Galapagos Islands on a large cruise ship, most travelers reach this archipelago by flying into the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, before taking a flight or a boat to Galapagos. Safety varies greatly across Ecuador. The US and Australian Governments recommend its citizens avoid the country’s far north, where kidnappings and violence are rife. But Quito is a relatively safe destination, especially if you follow these tips:

While in Quito, steer clear of certain troubled areas. Avoid the hiking trails between the Quito cable car and Rucu Pichincha volcano, where tourists have been robbed. Pickpockets and thieves also commonly target foreigners in Quito at La Carolina park, El Ejido park, La Mariscal, and La Marin.

Due in part to how Western media portrays Muslim countries, some travelers may have concerns about visiting Turkey.

In reality, Islam shapes travelers’ experiences in overwhelmingly positive ways — through the indelible impressions it has left on everything from Turkish foodways to the country’s iconic architecture.

Islam in Turkey dates back to the 8th century, when Turkic tribes fought alongside Arab Muslims against Chinese forces at the Battle of Talas in 751 A.D. Spurred by the influence of ruling dynasties, many people converted to Islam over the next few centuries.

Modern Turkey was founded in 1923 as a distinctly secular republic — a key difference between Turkey and countries such as Saudi Arabia or Pakistan — but Islam remains inextricably intertwined with Turkish culture.

Turkish children are designated Muslim at birth unless their parents are affiliated with another religion, and according to 2026 data from World Population Review, 94.5% of Turkey's population is Muslim. However, there is diversity in how individuals and families observce Islam.

Regardless of where they personally fall on the spectrum, Turkish people tend to approach religion with respect and decorum. We spoke with Fatih Özkan, from the Süleymaniye Mosque Cultural Info Center, about what you should keep in mind while traveling in Turkey so you can do the same.

Muslim practices in Turkey

The most prevalent form of Islam practiced in Turkey is Sunni Islam — another departure from neighboring countries where most people adhere to Shia Islam. Turkey is also known for its Sufi community, an Islamic mystic tradition associated with the city of Konya and the poet Rumi.

Devotees, known in the West as “whirling dervishes” use a spinning movement to deepen their spiritual connection. Some groups provide demonstrations where visitors can observe this tradition in person.

It’s good to know the roots of religious traditions but, ultimately, Özkan cautions against putting too much emphasis on the different titles and sects of Islam, which the Prophet Mohammed never mentioned and are not in the Koran.

Call to prayer in Turkey

One way that observant Muslims show their devotion is by praying throughout the day.

In every Turkish city, the call to prayer reverberates from mosque speakers five times daily, announcing central tenets of the Islamic faith and reminding Muslims to pray. The first one takes place before sunrise and admonishes the faithful to remember that “prayer is better than sleep.”

When they hear the call, practicing Muslims stop what they’re doing, kneel facing Mecca, and pray. Non-Muslims are not expected to partake in this, but there is some etiquette you should practice when you encounter others who do:

Avoid standing in front of anyone who is praying.
Stay silent during the call.
Give worshippers their space and refrain from taking pictures of them.

Ramadan

Ramadan, called Ramazan in Turkey, is a month-long period of fasting that Muslims around the world observe each year (the actual dates vary according to the Islamic lunar calendar). Participants eschew food and beverages — this includes water — from sunrise to sunset, breaking their daily fast with a celebratory meal, or iftar.

Taking part in the fast “is a kind of praying,” explains Özkan, and people who do are intentionally “kind of starving” as a way to build empathy. “They are trying to understand what poor people feel. Otherwise, how can we understand that?”

No one expects visiting foreigners to fast – many Turks don’t. But if, during Ramadan, you happen to be traveling in any Muslim country — or even a predominantly Muslim community or neighborhood — you can be courteous by not eating and drinking in public during the day. Opt for indoor seating in restaurants and if you need water, sip it discreetly. At sunset, head to restaurants to sample special bread, dates, and other delicacies that are traditionally served at the meal.

Visiting a mosque in Turkey

Visiting a mosque is one of the best ways to learn about Muslim culture and experience unparalleled examples of Islamic architecture and design, which is typified by jewel tones, gold embellishment, and constellations of geometric patterns. Many historic mosques, including the Süleymaniye Mosque where Özkan works, are part of larger complexes that once included schools, cemeteries, and shops.

Mosques are open to all visitors except during prayer times. (Non-Turkish Muslim travelers are always free to join in prayers, says Özkan.) You can also engage registered guides for an educational tour of mosques like Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, the Blue Mosque, and Kariye Mosque.

The Süleymaniye Mosque Cultural Info Center offers 20-minute presentations about Turkish culture, with complimentary tea or Turkish coffee — and sometimes even soup and baklava, says Özkan. The center’s volunteers are also available inside the mosque to answer questions about the history and architecture of this striking space.

When entering a mosque, both men and women need to have their legs covered and shoes removed. Women are expected to cover their heads with a scarf. (Don’t worry if you forget; most mosques have scarves you can borrow.)

Note that many Muslims come to mosques to pray or read the Koran or just relax in a sacred space even outside scheduled prayer times. Respect them by refraining from public displays of affection, taking pictures of them, or engaging in disruptive and loud behavior.

Eating and drinking in Turkey

Islam does have some guidelines for food and drink, but they are unlikely to affect travelers, particularly in major cities like Istanbul.

Pork is not widely available and very few restaurants serve it. Alcohol, on the other hand, is, even though Islam technically prohibits intoxicants.

That being said, Özkan suggests having “clear limits” when you are drinking in public. Keep it close to your hotel if you can and understand that no one really wants to deal with drunk, rowdy foreigners.

Other public behavior to avoid in Turkey

In addition to public drunkenness, public displays of affection are not customary in Turkey. While kissing both cheeks is a typical greeting, kissing on the mouth is considered private.

“Muslims in Turkey and generally [in the] Islamic world, they keep these touches [and] physical things in their houses,” says Özkan.

Some Turkish women also tend to dress more modestly than their Western counterparts, particularly in conservative communities like Fatih or Uskudar in Istanbul or smaller towns and villages. That being said, Özkan believes that men should refrain from staring at women — something male travelers should also keep in mind during their time in Turkey.

“Allah created us and… we have a freedom” of behavior, he says, but “that free will brings us responsibility.”

Religious extremism in Turkey

Just because a community is conservative doesn’t mean it is a hotbed of religious or political extremism — or a threat to your safety.

Freedom of speech and assembly is handled differently in Turkey than in Western countries, so if you encounter protests or demonstrations during your travels, it’s best to simply walk on by. You can be arrested for criticizing the government. It's important to refrain from criticism on social media. too.

Also, check your government’s current advisories before traveling to Turkey. As of July 2026, the US State Department’s travel advisory for Turkey is a Level 4 in the border region with Syria and Iraq, and they advise travelers not to travel within six miles of the borders. The rest of the country has a Level 2 advisory. There is a continued threat of terrorist attacks , armed conflict, and arbitrary detentions.

From the popular Caminito strip and Casa Rosada to the charismatic nightlife scene, there’s always something to see or do in Buenos Aires. With so many neighborhoods to check out, chances are you’ll be out and about from dusk to dawn.

The good news is that Buenos Aires is relatively safe compared to its South American counterparts. Most of the inner city streets and neighborhoods are clean, well maintained and well-lit at night. Plus, the city has a good public transport system, especially the bus service.

But there are little nuances to navigating your way around the city. So before you take a stroll through La Boca, or hit up one of the city’s all-night boliches (nightclubs with dancing), it pays to read up on the best ways to get around this city quickly and safely. Public transport in Buenos Aires

If it’s your first time in the city, you'll probably be calling Palermo, Recoleta or Puerto Madero home for a few days. These neighborhoods are popular with visitors and expats, and as soon as you step out of your hotel you’ll find just about everything you need to experience Buenos Aires’ hottest dining and club scenes.

But burst through these cosmopolitan bubbles, and you’ll discover there’s so much more to explore, and public transport can be a great, affordable way to see it all.

Note: If you’re traveling alone late at night, especially females, it’s best to avoid the subway. Opt for a registered taxi or travel with a friend instead.

Local buses and subway

Previously shunned by the middle or upper class, the Colectivo (local bus) and the subte (subway) are now two of the most popular ways to travel in and around the city, especially during the day.

There’s a service that runs through, or close to, all popular destinations and attractions. But keep in mind this is a city of more than three million people, so it can get pretty crowded, especially during weekday peak periods, which are around 8-9am and 6-8pm.

As you would in any crowded area while traveling, make sure you stay alert and watch out for pickpockets who might bump or slide up against you.

You’ll be quick to notice even locals keep their belongings, such as handbags and laptop bags, very close to them while traveling around. Wear bags across and over your shoulder if possible, and zip them shut. Don’t forget to leave your valuable jewelry at home. Wearing anything sparkly on public transport (or anywhere in South America, for that matter) is a big no-no.

If you’re more of a backpacking kind of nomad, you’ll want to wear your bag around your front, not your back.

Depending on the neighborhood, avoid standing around flicking through your smartphone on public transport (or on the streets). La Boca, especially just outside of the main Caminito area, and Retiro, mainly around the market and train station, are two popular visitor destinations where you’ll want to stay on your guard. That witty social media post isn’t worth tempting even the most rookie criminal! So keep it in a safe, closed section of your bag or in one of your front pockets. That goes for wallets, too.

Stay safe - hold on tight

Another safety tip is to get on or off the bus and train quickly and to hold on tight.

On most streets and roads, the bus won’t pull up to the curb, even if there’s a queue. Sometimes, the bus will barely make a complete stop to let people on and off, so you’ll need to be on your A-game. Also, watch out for cyclists in the bike lane or motorcyclists zipping nearby before you get on or off.

Once the last person has stepped up, drivers are quick to close the doors and drive off again. It’s followed by a rollercoaster of a ride, so grab a seat or hold on to something quick!

This all makes for a quick and efficient ride, but a somewhat chaotic one too! Some travelers have reported their ankles or shoes getting stuck in the door before they’ve fully got on board or off their bus or train.

The city has an electronic card system, so instead of loose change, you’ll now need a SUBE card to travel on the bus and subway.

You can buy a SUBE (pronounced “soo-beh”) online and have it mailed to a post office or your home. You can also choose to have it delivered to a SUBE Customer Service Center and pick it up there. You can add funds to your card online or at kiosks or train and subway ticket offices using cash.

SUBE Digital is a new option within the SUBE app that allows you to pay directly from your mobile phone, as opposed to paying with your physical card. Currently this works with buses and will eventually include trains, subways, and water transportation in Buenos Aires. You’ll need a phone with Android 8 or higher and NFC technology in order to use it.

To use the bus, you’ll need to tell the driver where you’d like to get off (by cross street, or name if it’s a well-known destination), and the driver will program your fare into the card reader. Then you tap your card, and you’re done. There’s no need to tap off at the end of the trip.

Under the forward-thinking rule of Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, known as MbS, and Saudi’s 2030 Vision, the formerly feared religious police, or Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV), has today been stripped of most of its powers; flogging has been outlawed, and women given rights to travel alone, drive cars, and work freely.

For visitors, the law has eased to an extend that tourists do not have to cover up, although modest dress (covering shoulders and below the knee for both men and women) is advised. In hotels, even non-married tourists are allowed to share rooms, and single female travelers are welcomed, and are free to travel throughout the country.

Missionary behavior, such as preaching a religion other than Islam, is considered a crime in Saudi Arabia. Yet, there has been talks about building a church for Christian worship within the mega-development of Neom in the future. Travelers are allowed to bring a religious text, such as a Bible, into the country, but for personal use only.

Lese majeste

Publicly criticizing the King, the royal family, or the government of Saudi Arabia, is against the law, as is posting any criticism of Saudi Arabia’s law, policies, or behavior on social media platforms. Even if you post negative comments when you're not in Saudi Arabia, you could still be held liable. This even includes just liking someone else's comment that is critical of the Saudi government, its leaders, policies or religion. People have been sentenced to 45 years in prison because of social media posts. Make sure you delete anything that could be considered controversial before you travel to Saudi Arabia.

Criticism of the flag of Saudi Arabia is considered insulting, as it bears the Islamic declaration of faith. Descecration of any other inappropriate use of the flag can lead to serious punishment.

Restrictions in Saudi Arabia

Alcohol

Alcohol has been illegal in Saudi Arabia since 1952. However, one liquor store opened in Riyadh in 2024. It's important to note that the U.S. embassy still states that alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia and can result in jail sentences or death.

Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, the date of which changes every year by around 10 days, it is respectful to avoid eating, drinking, smoking, and chewing gum, between sunrise and sunset hours in public. Most restaurants are closed during the day, but many open after the sun goes down.

Drugs

Personal use, trafficking, or smuggling drugs in Saudi Arabia is illegal and punishment can include the death penalty. If you are bringing medication with you, check ahead of time to see if it is a prescription medication that needs prior approval.

Imports

Beyond the general importation ban of illegal drugs and weapons, alcohol, pork, and pornography are also expressly prohibited.

Pornography is widely defined and may include publications such as women’s fashion magazines if models are shown in undergarmets or swimsuits. On occasion, portable media devices can be seized for inspection by authorities, and you may lose your device if it has anything deemed to be forbidden on it.

Photography

Taking photos in Saudi Arabia can be a touchy subject. Avoid taking pictures of government or military facilities.

If you wish to take pictures of locals, and especially of women, simply ask. Many are more than happy to pose for an interested traveler, just do not attempt to do it sneakily, as that might just upset the wrong person.

Personal ID

Always carry your identification with you at all times. Saudi authorities reserve the right to check your identification, and this is a common occurrence especially if you are passing through security checkpoints.

Safety tips for women travelers

Female travelers can wear moderate clothing, which covers shoulders and ends below the knees in Jeddah, Riyadh, and tourist hot spots such as AlUla. If exploring more remote areas, you might feel more comfortable wearing a loose abaya, the long, flowing robe, typically black, but available and worn in many colors.

Neither local women nor female travelers have to cover their head, even if many choose to do so. It’s a simple and good idea to carry a scarf and abaya in your bag, for occasions where you might feel a little underdressed.

Women travelers can hire cars, and drive without a male chaperone. Despite the obvious separation of genders in many places, travelers have reported that locals are attentive, welcoming and go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable and safe.

That said, lone female travelers are always at risk to some extent, whichever country they are in, and common-sense precautions should always be taken.

This is one issue where Saudi Arabia has not relaxed the laws, and LGBTQ+ relationships and transgender expression are illegal. Punishments can be severe.

Public displays of affection are not recommended, and this is particularly important for same-sex couples. Act modestly and respectfully. Discretion is everything.

As of July 2026, the United Arab Emirates has an elevated travel advisory due to the threat of armed conflict and terrorism. According to the US State Department, there's been a threat of drone and missile attacks due to the war in Iran. There also has been disruption to commercial flights. Prior to that, Dubai, the most populated city in the UAE, had one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Even petty incidents such as pickpocketing are rare. On a recent visit, I never felt uneasy in crowded places or when I was out at night and traveled without worry for my personal safety or my belongings. Personal safety in Dubai is largely attributed to strict laws and a general obedience to the rigorous government.

While Dubai is, in general, less strict than the other Emirates, still be wary of a few sensitive topics, from alcohol laws to LGBTQ+ laws. And despite Dubai’s reputation as a safe place for travelers, there are still some factors to consider when visiting both the city and the emirate of Dubai, including precautions when it comes to extreme heat and desert excursions.

Women’s safety

Generally, Dubai is a very safe destination for women travelers, solo or in a group. English is widely spoken, public transportation is abundant, and there are free WiFi zones located across the city. Personal safety in Dubai is among the highest in the world.

Women’s safety is partly a result of the strict local culture. That being said, I did have a number of unwelcome encounters in bars and clubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi when I was followed around and harassed. I never experienced anything like this on the streets, though.

When it comes to clothes, Dubai is less strict than other emirates, such as more traditional Sharjah, the third largest emirate, where it is advisable to dress conservatively. Due to the large number of Europeans in Dubai, it is relatively acceptable to wear shorts or a short dress in the more westernized establishments. The time of the year when you should be particularly careful about what you dress, however, is during the month of Ramadan, when observances of the Islamic holiday are in place. While this doesn’t require foreign women to cover their heads, it is recommended to dress more modestly, such as wearing pants, a long dress, and modest shirts.

LGBTQ+ safety

Although Dubai has a cosmopolitan front with its flashy hotels and upscale restaurants, that doesn’t mean it is progressive in every way. The United Arab Emirates has some of the strictest laws surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and Dubai is no exception. Every type of same-sex act is illegal and punishable by severe measures, including fines, deportation, and imprisonment. While the most extreme consequences are typically applicable to Muslims, it is important to be aware of these laws and be cautious about not engaging in same-sex public displays of affection. This rule applies for heterosexual couples as well, for that matter, and all public displays of affection – including holding hands – are illegal and should be avoided.

Avoiding heat stroke

Heat is a significant consideration when visiting Dubai. During a large part of the year, temperatures climb to more than 100°F (38°C). June through September are the hottest months, with the peak heat hitting in August. You’ll need to come prepared for these temperatures if you plan to be outside. Much of the city’s population spends its time inside air-conditioned restaurants and malls during these months to avoid the heat. If you plan to go outside, wear lightweight clothing and stay hydrated. You’ll want to think carefully before planning any outdoor adventures during these hot months. Luckily, there is no shortage of swimming pools at hotels throughout Dubai if you’re hoping to get some sun while staying cool.

While there’s a belief that Dubai is excessively hot year-round, this desert city does experience a few months’ reprieve. November through February have cooler, more pleasant temperatures. January is the coolest month with highs in the mid-70s (low-20s C) and lows in the low-mid 60s (15-18°C). These months are ideal for hiking, camping, and other outdoor excursions.

Desert safety in Dubai

Accessing the desert on your own as a first-time visitor is not recommended unless you’re an experienced outdoor adventurer. There are plenty of types of four-wheel drive desert safaris you can book with a local guide, or you can choose to pay a visit to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

The desert can reach even more extreme temperatures than the city, so it’s important to pack appropriately. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that keeps you covered from the sun. Use sunscreen and bring sufficient water. If you do choose to embark on a solo desert excursion, know that you’ll be in wide swaths of sand with minimal to no infrastructure and intermittent phone service. Always bring more than enough water and food, hydration tablets, a spare tire, and appropriate camping gear if you’re staying overnight. While there are no large predators in the Dubai desert, be aware of venomous critters such as vipers, scorpions, and spider species endemic on the Arabian Peninsula.

Driving in Dubai

One of the most exciting parts about exploring a new place is the freedom to drive through unknown territory. Non-residents can drive in Dubai with an international driver’s license and you can rent a car if you are over 21.

Dubai is a very busy city with massive highways that can be daunting at first. Maneuvering the multi-lane highways is initially intimidating, there are helpful traffic signs in both Arabic and English. The left lane is the fastest and should be avoided if you’re not comfortable contending with aggressive drivers. Be aware of speed limits and traffic rules to avoid traffic fines.

While there is a certain thrill to off-roading on sand dunes, ensure that if you head off for a sand bashing adventure, you’re equipped with spare tires and a car with four-wheel drive.

Staying Safe in Rio: Essential Tips for Travelers

South America’s most iconic tourist city, Rio de Janeiro is famous for its sterling beaches, jungled peaks, and Christ the Redeemer landmark, and infamous for its slums, gangs, and street crime. During my visits to Rio, I learned it can be safely visited by tourists who are cautious and vigilant, but is extremely dangerous for those whose behaviour is naïve or bold. Here’s some tips for avoiding trouble in this wonderful Brazilian metropolis.

Does Rio deserve its reputation as a dangerous city?

Rio is globally renowned as being crime riddled, and is ranked as the world’s 13^th most dangerous city on the Crime Index by leading metrics website Numbeo. That placed it above other cities infamous for street crime, like Cape Town in South Africa, Tijuana in Mexico, and Cali in Colombia.

Tourists rarely need to be concerned by the city’s gangs, or the high murder rate they cause, because their violent crimes are mostly targeted at other gang members, and typically occur in the favela slums. But because 17% of Rio residents live in poverty, it does have thousands of petty criminals who target tourists. Here are some of the biggest threats to tourists:

Pickpocketing in crowded touristy locations, like street markets, or Christ the Redeemer.
Street robberies in quiet spots within the city, where police and witnesses are absent.
Theft at Rio’s beaches, where tourists often make the mistake of leaving valuables in the sand.
Night time sightseeing is far more risky, even in locations which are quite safe by day, like Copacabana beach.

Don’t draw attention to yourself

Being inconspicuous as a tourist is almost always a good thing, but is especially valuable in cities with street crime problems. Unfortunately, as a 197cm tall Caucasian man, it’s very difficult for me to go unnoticed, but here’s five other ways I maintained a low profile to avoid unwanted attention in Rio:

Don’t talk too loudly. Crafty street criminals will not only pay more attention to you, but can also eavesdrop to glean information about your movements, plans, or even where you are storing valuables.
Don’t wear garish clothes. Keep the pink Hawaiian shirt in your suitcase and wear something less eyecatching.
Don’t flash your valuables. Keep your phone, wallet and camera out of sight whenever possible.
Don’t linger outside tourist hotspots. Petty criminals lurk there hunting victims, so start walking immediately to your next location or, as I often did in Rio, have a rideshare car already waiting to pick you up.

Tour guides can also act as security guards

Before I even left my Rio de Janeiro hotel for my first adventure, I’d been repeatedly advised about the dangers I’d face as a photographer walking around the city with a big, expensive camera. These warnings came from a Brazilian passenger on my flight, an immigration officer at Rio airport, and then the concierge at my hotel. Following the advice of these locals, I hired a tour guide, which I then learned has the following safety benefits:

Rio tour guides essentially double up as security guards. While I was distracted taking photos, my guide was watching my back, making sure no petty thief was creeping up on me.
Guides can give you honest advice about which parts of the city are dangerous. For example, I’d read online a museum I wished to visit was in a no-go zone for tourists. Whereas my guide said that area was perfectly safe, and so I went there and found he was correct.

Rio’s beaches are riddled with theft

I hired that guide in Rio because I had to do a long photo shoot at Copacabana beach, and locals told me I could easily be robbed walking around there with an expensive camera, even in broad daylight. My guide, Celio, had done so many tours of Copacabana that he recognises many of the local petty criminals, and regularly pointed them out to me.

Here’s three tips for staying safe at Rio’s beautiful beaches:

Never leave any valuables on the sand, with your towel and clothes, as thieves will pounce while you swim.
Avoid Rio’s beaches at night, when the cover of darkness makes thieves and robbers more brazen.
Beware of visiting quiet beaches, where criminals can target you with few or no witnesses around.

Which neighbourhoods are safe?

Rio is a massive, sprawling metropolitan area, home to about 14 million people, which makes it similar in size to New York City. Understandably, then, the safety of its suburbs varies greatly, from no-go slums, to wealthy beachfront areas, and the largely-safe Centro downtown precinct.

Favelas – Rio’s labyrinthine, hillside slums, called favelas, are riven by poverty and drug use, and roamed by gang members who range from petty criminals to savage killers. Do not visit the favelas alone, and reconsider joining guided tours of these slums.

Centro – Rio’s downtown area brims with museums, churches and shopping areas. Its busiest areas are quite safe in the daylight, but most of Centro becomes risky after dark, when street criminals are abundant.

Copacabana – Perhaps the world’s most famous beach, Copacabana is flanked by dozens of tourist hotels, restaurants and bars. During the day, pickpocketing is the main threat, but by night violent crime becomes a serious concern.

Lapa – Bars, restaurants and Samba clubs line the streets of Rio’s chief nightlife area, Lapa. Safety is solid inside its venues. But avoid lingering in its streets at night. If you’re walking from one venue to another, do so quickly.

Scams in Rio

Poverty pushes some Rio residents to make money from scamming tourists, so here’s three scams to watch out for.

Volunteering to take your photo – Some scammers approach foreigners taking selfies at tourist spots, politely offer to take a photo for them, and then flee when the tourist gives them their phone.

Distraction pickpockets – A street criminal will distract you – bumping into you, spilling a drink on you – while their accomplice slips their hand into your bag or pocket.

Fake tickets – Outside famed attractions like Christ the Redeemer, scammers wearing what look like official uniforms may approach you and sell you a fake entry ticket. Only buy attraction tickets from the official booths.

Travel Insurance for Rio de Janeiro

Even with the right precautions, things can still go wrong in a city like Rio de Janeiro, which is where travel insurance may become an important backup plan. If you’re carrying valuables like cameras or phones, or relying on pre-booked tours and accommodation, a policy may help cover theft (up to policy limits), unexpected cancellations, or medical expenses if you’re injured or fall ill. Brazil’s biggest city, São Paulo has a staggering 22 million residents, equivalent to New York and Chicago combined. Most metropolises that gigantic have an array of safety issues, and São Paulo is no different, although I felt less at risk here than I did in fellow Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro. Tourists can enjoy a safe trip to São Paulo, just like me, if they pay attention to the following tips.

How dangerous is São Paulo?

Brazil has made great progress in improving its safety levels nationwide over the past decade, and that includes in its biggest city, São Paulo. In 2025, Brazil recorded 34,086 murders, a giant reduction on the 60,308 homicides it saw in 2017.

Meanwhile, São Paulo in 2025 recorded its lowest rate of robberies in 25 years. This is widely attributed to enhanced policing efforts, including the recent rollout across São Paulo of tens of thousands of CCTV cameras with AI facial recognition capabilities.

Police have used this technology to arrest more than 1,000 fugitives, and São Paulo street criminals are now wary of being identified by these sophisticated cameras. All of which means this city is now undeniably safer for tourists. Personally, I found the ubiquity of its CCTV cameras made me feel more secure as I walked the city’s streets alone with a camera in hand.

Your cell phone is the main target

At first, I thought locals in São Paulo were just remarkably uninterested in using their phones, but later I realised they were just trying to keep these devices out of sight while in public, for the sake of safety. While robberies in São Paulo are dropping, this crime now increasingly focuses on cell phones.

Stats show that 87% of robberies in this city involve the theft of a cell phone. Street criminals in São Paulo now prefer to steal cell phones more than any other valuable, because organised crime syndicates need these phones to fuel their vast cybercrime operations.

Brazil has one of the world’s highest rates of cybercrime, with some of the nation’s most sophisticated gangs now gradually shifting from drugs and prostitution to making vast sums of money from online scams. Rather than attempting to hack into people’s online accounts to steal their personal details, these gangs often find it easier to just steal someone’s phone, and then access all the sensitive information it holds.

Here’s three tips to protect yourself from phone thieves and robbers:

Minimise the amount of time you use your phone in public, and don’t hold it in your hand when not using it.
Avoid standing on the very edge of streets, as phone thieves like to skid up on a motorbike, grab your phone and flee. Instead, stand well back from the street on the sidewalk.
If your phone is stolen or robbed, immediately return to your hotel and go online to deactivate your phone’s SIM card, and to put a block on any of your phone’s apps that are linked to banking or sensitive information.

Which São Paulo neighbourhoods are safe?

São Paulo’s vast size means its suburbs vary massively, in terms of safety and suitability for tourists. Here’s a rundown of five of its best known areas:

Jardins – Perhaps São Paulo’s wealthiest and safest area, Jardins stands out due to its leafy, low-rise environment, which contrasts with its concrete-laden, skyscraper-heavy surroundings. I stayed close to Oscar Freire street, a graceful thoroughfare lined by chic hotels, bars and restaurants.

Pinheiros – While Jardins is where São Paulo’s millionaires live, Pinheiros is where its funky folk hang out. It is well stocked with accommodation – from boutique hotels to five-star properties – as well as hosting many art galleries, hip fashion outlets and cool wine bar.

República – By day there’s plenty of reasons to visit Republica, a historic area of downtown decorated by shady parks, elegant plazas and historic landmarks like the magnificent Municipal Theatre of São Paulo. By night, however, its dimly-lit streets fill with drug dealers and petty criminals and is best avoided.

Cracolândia – Its name hints at crack cocaine, which is one of many potent, illegal drugs openly sold on the streets of this dysfunctional and dangerous area.

Favelas – São Paulo’s outer suburbs have major issues with poverty and drugs, and are dotted by many favela slums, which should be avoided by tourists.

Who are the infamous First Capital Command?

Swathes of São Paulo are controlled not by police, but by Brazil’s most powerful gang, the First Capital Command. Similar to Italy’s Mafia, China’s Triads, or Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, this Brazilian organised crime syndicate is impossibly wealthy, ferociously violent, and has deep influence over their country’s politics and policing. More than 11,000 members run São Paulo’s drug, prostitution, people smuggling, and black-market weapon markets.

Tourists are rarely caught in their crosshairs, as crimes against foreigners earn far greater attention, and the First Capital Command do not want added scrutiny from Brazilian authorities. But travellers must still be wary of their threat, particularly in São Paulo’s poor outer suburbs.

Scams in São Paulo

Although robberies and homicides are down in São Paulo, this city still has a major issue with scams, including those targeted specifically at tourists. Here’s a few scams to look out for:

Card skimming. When using an ATM in São Paulo, be wary that local criminals commonly attach devices to ATMs that allow them to steal your banking information. To protect yourself, only use ATMs inside a bank, which are heavily secured.
Taxi scams. One of the oldest and most common tourist scams in São Paulo involves taxi drivers either using hacked meters, which send the fare rising at a dizzying speed, or refusing to use the meter and quoting an inflated flat fare. Avoid this issue by instead booking all your transport via the Uber app, and turning on all of its safety features.
Nightlife scams. São Paulo’s nightlife is wonderfully vibrant, but tourists need to be cautious, especially alone Rua Augusta street. Avoid venues with pushy staff standing outside who try to pressure you to enter. These bars commonly scam tourists by handing them wildly inflated bills at the end of the night.

Why the Philippines is considered a safe destination

Tourism is incredibly important to the Philippines’ economy, accounting for 20% of its GDP in 2025. Is Manila safe for travelers?

Manila is gargantuan, home to 27 million people, equal to the population of Australia. Its suburbs range greatly, from slums, to gated communities of mansions. So tourist safety fluctuates enormously, based on the following locations.

Ayala Triangle - I’ve rarely felt safer anywhere in Southeast Asia than in downtown Manila’s rich, modern Ayala Triangle area, lined by fancy shopping centres and plush condos, and patrolled by armed private security.

Intramuros – Manila’s best tourist attraction, Intramuros is a 16^th century citadel built by the occupying Spaniards. By day, it’s a safe area to wander and sightsee, although by night it becomes far more dangerous.

Malate – My first time in Manila I made the mistake of staying in Malate. I assumed it was safe due to hosting tourist attractions like Manila Zoo, the Baywalk promenade, and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. But it’s also home to a nightlife area brimming with street crime.

Tondo – Tourists are unlikely to visit Tondo deliberately. But they could accidentally wander into this dangerous slum, because it borders the touristy Chinatown area. Tondo residents suffer from inadequate housing, health, education and employment services. As a result, crime flourishes.

How dangerous are Boracay and Palawan?

Tourists adore Boracay and Palawan, tropical beach getaways blessed by sublime coastal scenery. Here’s safety issues to consider at these two beautiful destinations.

Water sports scams – Many tourists to Boracay and Palawan do watersport activities like jet skiing. Unfortunately, it’s easy for them to be scammed. Most commonly, when they rent a jetski, they don’t notice it’s covered by subtle pieces of tape, which hide pre-existing damage. Once you return the jet ski, the scamming vendor will surreptitiously remove the tape, claim you caused that damage, and give you an enormous bill for repairs. Stay safe by only renting a jetski via a reputable hotel.

Speed boat danger – Speed boat tours of neighouring islands and beaches are popular with tourists to Boracay and Palawan. Unfortunately, they have poor safety standards. Often they speed, ignore severe weather warnings, and don’t have sufficient life jackets on board. If you want to visit another island, it’s best to book this activity with a reputable hotel.

Scams in the Philippines

Unfortunately, poverty is so widespread in the Philippines that some desperate people resort to scamming tourists to survive. Here’s three of the most common scams and how to avoid them.

Money changing scam - My late father, a veteran traveller, fell prey to this common scam in Manila. Money changers advertise an extremely attractive exchange rate to lure tourists. The vendor takes your foreign currency, counts it on a benchtop, and then shows you the correct amount of Philippines Pesos. As they give you the Pesos, they use sleight of hand to drop some of these notes under the benchtop. The solution: Always change money inside banks.

Manila horse-drawn carriage scam – Horse-drawn carriage rides are offered at several of Manila’s most popular tourist areas. Unfortunately, some of these operators rip off foreigners. When tourists ask for a ride, the driver will tell them to get in, then avoid discussing the price. At journey’s end, they’ll quote an exorbitant figure and, if you object, will raise their voice and gesticulate to intimidate and embarrass you. To be safe, confirm the price first or avoid the carriages altogether, as the horses may not be treated kindly.

Taxi scams - Unfortunately, a minority of Filipino taxi drivers refuse to use their meter and then massively overcharge foreigners. So, before I enter a taxi here, I ask the driver if they’ll use the meter, and then watch them activate it. Typically, the scamming drivers wait around outside the busiest tourist areas. Avoid them by ordering a taxi on your phone via apps like Grab.

Gun crime in the Philippines

The Philippines has a huge firearm problem, with more than 600,000 unregistered guns in the country, according to research by the University of Sydney. While most of this gun crime occurs in slums, where tourists are unlikely to venture, travellers still need to take precautions to avoid being robbed:

Do not pull out wads of cash in public. Where possible, it is safer to pay for things using your bankcard.
Do not wear expensive jewelry, leave it in the lockbox of your hotel room.
Try to minimize the amount of time you are holding your expensive phone. Instead, keep it tucked away.

Travel insurance may play an important role when visiting the Philippines, where safety can vary and unexpected situations may arise. Whether you’re exploring busy cities, remote islands, or taking part in water activities, having travel insurance may help protect your wallet against unforeseen events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, delays, or stolen belongings. Terrorism in the Philippines

Few places in the world are as plagued by terrorism as Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines, located in its deep south. For decades it has been haunted by Islamic terrorists, most prominently the Abu Sayyaf Group. Here’s what to know:

The US Government not only advises its citizens to reconsider traveling to Mindanao, but instructs them to completely avoid Marawi, in western Mindanao.
In 2017, pro-Islamic-State extremists laid siege to Marawi City for five months, leading to hundreds of deaths as they fought against the Philippines military.
More recently, terrorists have executed bombings and suicide attacks in public spaces in Mindanao.
If you must visit there, you should be wary of visiting crowded places that are attractive targets for attacks, like shopping centres, nightlife precincts and busy markets.
