Media Release: New York, NY – Post-pandemic pent-up-demand has fueled one of the United States’ busiest travel seasons on record, with many travelers spending more than last year, and going further afield.

World Nomads, a fast-growing travel insurance provider offering simple and flexible travel insurance and safety advice to help consumers travel more confidently, surveyed more than 100 global travelers on their travel behavior, in a 24-hour snap poll.

The survey found this is shaping up to be one of the busiest seasons on record - 80% of those surveyed have already traveled this year. Of those surveyed, 73% report air travel as the top mode of transportation for their upcoming travels, while 14% will hit the rails and 9% will take to the road in their car. Only 3% of respondents will opt for a cruise vacation this year.

World Nomads asked travelers how their travel spending compares to last year. 57% of respondents said they’ll spend more; 30% said they’ll spend less and 13% said they will spend the same as last year.

“Travelers are spending more on travel purchases this year and going to destinations further from home than they did in previous years,” said Christina Tunnah, General Manager of Marketing and Brands, World Nomads.

“As a result, we are seeing a sizeable uptick in travelers looking to protect their investment with travel insurance products that offer trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits.

“Our customers are also finding value in that fact that, unlike some of our competitors, our premiums are not based on the trip cost, and some of our products cover trip cancellation for a covered reason up to $10,000.”

Top Summer Travel Destinations

As more and more Americans discover the need and value of travel insurance in today’s volatile travel environment, World Nomads has analyzed its recent sales data to determine where travelers are going this summer (2023) versus last summer (2022).

Europe continues to be the top summer travel destination, with Italy, the UK, Greece and Spain as the top individual countries.

"With the Covid shackles well and truly off this year, our U.S. travelers are traveling further afield and taking those dream trips,” Ms Tunnah said.

World Nomads has seen a 37% increase in sales to Africa, with Tanzania, South Africa and Egypt as the top travel destinations in the region. This is followed by Asia, with a 20% increase in sales. Japan, Indonesia and Thailand rank as the most popular countries to visit in that region.
