Travel insurance impacts - Australian government advises ‘Do Not Travel’ to the Democratic Republic of Congo

World Nomads is unable to provide travel insurance cover for travel to areas within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that have a “Do not travel” warning in place.

This follows the updated advice by the Australian Government which advised at the time of writing ‘Do Not Travel’ to certain areas including:

  • Provinces of Kasai, Kasai Central, Kasai Oriental, Sud-Kivu, Nord-Kivu, Ituri, Maniema, Tanganyika, Bas-Uélé and Haut-Uélé.

There are a number of reasons cited including safety, and the World Health Organisation declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in the DRC on 17 July 2019 following a resurgence and spread of Ebola Virus Disease cases.

What if I’m booked to travel to the DRC?

World Nomads will not provide cover for Australian’s traveling to any of the areas designated ‘Do Not Travel’ by the Australian Government.  This includes medical and baggage cover. Pre-trip cancellation cover is available, but only where a “Do not travel” warning was first given after you purchased the policy and after you booked the arrangements.

If you have a trip planned to the Democratic Republic of Congo and are concerned about your travel arrangements, please contact your carrier or tour operator in the first instance to confirm your arrangements.
