What to do if you suddenly fall ill

Let travel insurance be your first aid

1. Seek medical attention

Your health is a priority! Get medical help from a health care practitioner, such as a doctor, or go to a hospital for urgent cases. If you contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team, they can help get you to the right medical facilities. An FYI: You’ll also need to notify the team before undergoing any procedures or surgeries  so be sure to give us a ring.

2. Get it in writing

Most claims need supporting documentation, and it’s particularly important when it comes to medical cases. When you’re feeling under the weather, gathering documents may be the last thing on your mind. Nevertheless, it’s a crucial part of the claims process. Get a friend to help with the right paperwork. These documents could include:

  • A doctor or other medical practitioner’s report confirming your illness
  • A hospital admission report
  • Ambulance and medical evacuation reports

In some cases, we may need to obtain your past medical history from your regular doctor at home. Our claims team can keep you informed of any additional requirements.

3. Keep your receipts

You'll need to keep original receipts and official reports as evidence for your claim. Supporting documents may include your itineraries; receipts for any meals or accommodations for a bedside companion; and hospital and physician reports. We reserve the right to reduce or reject your claim should you not have the proper records.

4. Make a Claim

Read over your insurance policy to see what’s covered and to check if any terms, conditions or exclusions apply. With World Nomads, you can file your claim on our web site and send in any supporting documentation afterwards.

If you have questions about coverage or the claims process, just ask us.

Please refer to the Trip Cancellation section of your policy for more information.

Emergency medical

If you unexpectedly get sick with COVID-19 or another illness when travelling, you may be eligible for emergency medical benefits, including diagnostic tests prescribed by a physician. Please refer to the Emergency Medical section of your policy for more information.

Emergency evacuation

During your travels, you might have to return home early because of sudden or unforeseen circumstances. With trip interruption coverage, you may be eligible for reimbursement for a one-way, economy-class ticket home and any pre-paid, unused portions of your trip if you need to change your plans for a covered reason. There is no coverage for circumstances related to COVID-19 unless those circumstances relate to a new, confirmed and documented diagnosis that the insured has contracted Coronavirus while travelling. Please refer to the Trip Interruption section of your policy for more information.
