Why consider travel insurance when skiing or snowboarding?

Big dumps, fresh tracks and bluebird days will make for an epic trip, yet accidents on and off the hill do happen, even to the most experienced sliders. If you’re just learning on your first trip or you’re a ski bum chasing seasons, World Nomads travel insurance for residents of Brazil may be able to help you and your family when the unexpected hits your next winter adventure.

Do I need ski insurance?

Thousands of sports enthusiasts tackle the slopes every season, usually without any major incident. But adventure sports can be risky, especially when frosty temperatures and spine-rattling runs are part of the picture.

If your next vacation includes time on the slopes, you could find yourself needing help for anything from emergency medical care to an emergency evacuation or repatriation back home.

Here are a few case scenarios where travel insurance for skiing and snowboarding could be a real asset. Just remember these are example scenarios only. All claims require documentation and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

You could get into an accident

Whether you’re on- or off-piste, navigating steep (and even not so steep terrain) can be tricky. It only takes one bad fall or collision to end up with a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder, or a wrist fracture. Emergency medical bills can be just as painful as a crash. This is where travel insurance can soften the blow.

You might need to get to a hospital from far, far away

When you get hurt on a mountain, getting transportation to a hospital can be critical. Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can help plan your evacuation so that it’s timely and efficient. And thanks to travel insurance, it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

Your ski and snowboard equipment could get lost by your airline

If your skis or snowboard have been lost or damaged by your common carrier (your airline or other transportation provider), you could get reimbursed for the current value of your equipment (which factors in depreciation) or the cost of a replacement, up to a per item and total maximum limit. (Damage from the use of sports equipment is not covered.)

Bad weather can cause delays (and destruction)

Maybe an avalanche buried your lodge or a snowstorm delayed your connecting flight. Our plans cover inclement weather under certain circumstances. For example, if your flight is delayed en route to your destination for more than 12 hours, you could be reimbursed for food, taxis and accommodation you needed to purchase during the delay, up to the limits outlined in your plan.  Read your policy wording for full details.

You wouldn’t forget to pack your ski jacket and gloves – so why would you leave home without travel insurance?

Why should you consider travel insurance coverage for your next hiking and trekking adventure?

Hiking and trekking take you off the beaten path - and sometimes far from help if something goes wrong. Even on well-marked trails, things can go sideways quickly, from a sprained ankle to sudden illness or stolen baggage. Travel insurance designed for hiking may help protect your trip from unexpected medical emergencies, delays, and disruptions so you can explore confidently, knowing you have support if you need it.

Whether you’re traveling across the country or to a far-flung region of the world, your hiking adventure is an investment of time, money, and preparation. Insurance gives you the flexibility and backup you need if weather changes, connecting flights go off-schedule, or your bags fail to arrive at your destination. Having protection in place means you can focus on the trail ahead - not on what might go wrong.

Top tips for your trekking adventure

To make the most of your trek, keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Be prepared

Check the weather before you go, inspect your gear, and make sure your footwear and equipment are suited to the terrain. If you’re joining a guided tour, confirm that your operator is accredited and experienced.

  1. Get hike-fit

Even moderate hikes require stamina, balance, and strength. If you’re tackling altitude, such as on the Inca Trail, make sure you’re prepared for the thinner air. Train appropriately in the weeks before your trip.

  1. Choose routes responsibly

Match the trek to everyone’s experience level. Wear appropriate clothing and safety gear, stay hydrated, and respect environmental guidelines.

  1. Keep your receipts and documentation

Any claim you submit will require proof, such as purchase receipts or reports of loss or theft. Keep digital or printed copies of your important documents throughout your trip.

Other adventure activities covered

In addition to hiking and trekking, World Nomads covers more than 180 sports, activities, and experiences, from camping and rock climbing to many other outdoor pursuits. If your adventure goes beyond hiking, be sure to review our full list of covered activities to confirm what’s included in your plan.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for hiking. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • What is the difference between hiking, trekking, and mountaineering for travel insurance purposes?
For travel insurance coverage, “hiking” and “trekking” are often interchangeable and refer to walking routes of varying distances and difficulty. Mountaineering, however, typically involves technical climbing, specialized equipment, or high-altitude ascents. Because each activity carries different risks, our plans cover hiking and trekking under 3,000 meters but do not cover mountaineering or technical climbs requiring ropes or special gear.
  • Would hiking gear and equipment be covered?
Yes, many types of hiking gear may be covered if lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged by a carrier. Coverage limits vary by plan, and damage from normal use or wear and tear isn’t included. Review your plan documents carefully, especially if you’re carrying high-value items such as GPS devices or technical clothing.
  • Do I need insurance coverage for multi-day trekking trips?
Multi-day hikes often involve remote routes where help may be far away. Our plans may cover emergency medical treatment, evacuation, baggage protection, trip cancellation, and more, giving you flexibility and support throughout your adventure.
