World Nomads Create Scholarships Photography 2015 Applications Rays Of Night Rays of night! by Magali Couffon de Trevros India Shares Facebook Twitter Hundreds of families gather to celebrate Chhath Puja on esplanades near the ganga. They come in mass and camp the night to celebrate. It s huge family party easy going and happy. They come in trucks or walking at sunset and wait to sunrise. The idea is to workshop the Sun Children burn crackers and have a blast between the trucks in a ghostly atmosphere. The sounds and mood are high. Families hire the services of Transexuals to dance in the processions and offload the negative energies from the crowd. The hijras dance and make the show at the sound of drums and laughter. This way they earn a little money for their performances and justify they livelihood . Their role is of scapegoats... Launda is a eunuch! She s absorbed in her moves and sensuality for the greatest pleasure of the masses gathered to purify in the name of the sun. These transgenders arouse our discomfort more than any other groups. The irrepressible urge to be released from their male identity compels them to cross dress and behave like women, often exaggeratedly. The night always brings a bit of a spooky feel and this image shows the mask of discomfort along with a Great sense of family faith. These multiple facettes have always captivated my attention in India where mixed feelings are often felt.
