It's morning, and a 'gardian', the Camargue cowboy, has brought the beautiful white Camargue horses out to the reedy marshes unique to this area of Southern France.

In the Camargue,the horses live in semi-freedom in herds, called ''manades'' which the 'gardian' follow on horseback. It is a difficult life and unfortunately, due to economic and social pressures, their traditional lifestyle is becoming more difficult to maintain.

The Brotherhood of Camargue Horsemen has been tending the herds since the 1500s. Their identity is shown through wearing a brightly coloured, patterned shirt and holding their traditional long sticks.
