During the winter months, the boats are pulled out of the water and stored throughout the cities in the Cinque Terre area.  This boat sits on the steep walkway that leads to the waters edge.

A quick flight with the drone reveals why the Cinque Terre area is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  The landscaped terraces surrounding the citywide built in the twelfth century cover approximately 15 kilometers along the Lingurian coast.

As in all the Cinque Terre towns, flat stones secure the roof tiles of Vernazza's buildings against the winds of the storms from the sea.  The brightly colored buildings attract tourist from all over the world year round but in the winter the crowds are thinned out and the city is basically empty.

The last stop of the evening landed us on the rock outcropping in Riomaggiore.  We enjoyed watching the evening lights come on as the sun disappeared while we ate authentic Italian cheese, bread, and olives from a small grocer in the city.
