In India, events are celebrated in a grand way; the Mewar Festival of Udaipur which celebrates the arrival of spring is no exception. Observed throughout the state of Rajasthan with great fervour and devotion especially by womenfolk, it is distinct in its sacred recognition of the female spirit.

Dressed in their finest, the women of Rajasthan worship Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, at the start of spring when harvest and marital fidelity are paramount. Idols of Parvati are adorned and carried through the streets in a grand procession by girls, young and older women alike.

Prayers are offered to Shiva and Parvati; unmarried women ask to be blessed with a good husband, while married women ask for the welfare, health and long life of their husbands. Folk songs and dances dominate the celebrations which continue over three days.

Grand processions weave through narrow streets towards Gangaur Ghat at Pichola Lake.  The finely attired girls and women line the steps of the Ghat in a spectacularly colourful congregation, waiting for the moment to release the decorated idols on the sacred waters of the Lake.

The festivities are an exuberant toast to the women who are praised as pillars of strength. Outfitted in new garments, eyes traced with kohl and lips with vermillions they are proud and confident. In all their refinery and resplendence the women are liberated and joyous.
