Four men in Zanzibar load their dhow (a traditional, hand-made boat) before setting sail. The men are staid and stoic as they load the boat and prepare to leave land.

It takes all four men to keep the dhow sailing. Their craft is made of wood, iron, rope and canvas. The men are intimately familiar with dhow, like an old comfortable pair of shoes.

The dhow cost the men about $3,000 USD to make, and will remain seaworthy for at least ten years, if they're lucky. It is their livelihood.

Once the sails unfurl, the dhow sails smoothly. The four men take turns operating the various parts of the boat, and relaxing at the prow. They seem just as comfortable at sea as on land.

On the water, the men express their emotions freely. They laugh, clap, and smile unabashedly, even more than on land. It seems the sea brings out the best in them.
