Over 100 days, more than 800,000 were slaughtered in the 1994 Genocide. The world turned its back as neighbours killed neighbours and survivors struggled to survive. While the beauty is undeniable, farmland and lawns surrounding Murambi will never forget that it was the largest killing centre,

Anne Heyman learnt of leaders lost and millions orphaned. She knew she had to act and with partners, established Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village to develop new leaders for Rwanda. The school opened in 2009 believing, “If you see far, you’ll go far” and graduates are committed to changing the world!

Students arrive at ASYV – the “place where tears are dried” – feeling alone and lost. They build themselves up in their first year through therapies, sport, art, culture and music; join an adoptive family with a nurturing Mama and are exposed to amazing role models. The path to recovery begins.

From Year 2, students use skills they’ve received to repair the world outside (never losing sight of where they come from and where they plan to return to lead). This student is building a house for a widow, while others teach English or work in hospitals. Their passion and drive is infectious.

While Africa is famous for its sunsets, it was in Rwanda (aka Land of 1000 Hills) that I learned to appreciate sunrise. While the days started off misty, they quickly cleared to make way for light, just as the students’ hope and hard work towards a brighter future breaks through all barriers.
