Aubrey’s host, Katie, was an American woman who set sail in the '80s with a friend from San Fransisco. With no real plan, they took the advice of fellow sailors and found themselves porting in Golfito. They found a climate ripe with opportunity, and decided to stay and open the Banana Bay Marina.

There were several animals wandering around Banana Bay, but people clearly liked this dog the most. They said she once arrived aboard a boat, who could not continue to its destination with him aboard. The passengers convinced Katie, owner of Banana Bay Marina to keep it. She named it “Gypsy."

It was quiet as the sun went down. "Soon all the birds will fly from over here across the water,” Aubrey said, slowly waving her hand. "They all sleep in the trees over on this side.” Her eyes reflected that expectation and I was glad to be with someone who knew the intricacies of this town.
