It flows. It gives itself to all without distinction and settles into the lowest places without deliberation. It flows without discrimination through communities, for where it flows, life inevitably follows. For the inhabitants of Tonlé Sap, it is deeply intertwined in their way of life.  Water.

It laps against the fishing boats and the stilted houses, nestled among the flooded forest on the fringes of the seasonally inundated lake. Time is spent repairing fishing nets and sorting the catch. People live in harmony with the ecosystem. It is integral to all life here.  Water.

It courses down the main street, where distinctive towering stilted houses line the ‘road’, and cars are replaced by boats with the rising of the waters.

It flows. It transports children on their journey through life. Teaching them important lessons beyond the classroom. It permeates into everyday proverbs and prayer, metaphor and musings, folklore and families, cultures and communities.
