At the foothill of Mehrangarh Fort at Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India, the most majestic and one of the largest forts in India, there is a 500 years old settlement called Brahmapuri with most of the houses painted blue.

This place has seen 22 generations but almost nothing has changed except for the better electricity connection, telephone lines and improved drainage system. Narrow lanes flanked on both sides by ground-plus-one stone made structures.

Cities prosaic termites were the main reason behind the colour Blue. This army was causing widespread structural damage in the settlement. To contain the menace, the houses were painted by adding chemicals such as copper sulphate to standard whitewash.

The stone structures protect the people from scorching heat, sandstorms, wintry winds..... The arched windows, though few, are in consonance with the doors and gateways. Some houses have extremely well-carved jaali and intricate bracket work on the facade.
