Everyone celebrates Day of the Dead in their own way over the 3 day holiday. Natives still gather for chants & dancing through the streets blessing people & spirits through Palo Santo smoke. Bells ring as they dance for the souls of the departed wearing traditional costumes full of color & symbolism

Following sounds of singing & prayers led down a dark alley towards a tiny church that glowed with candlelight reflecting off the mosaics. Stepping out of the incense fill Catholics sanctuary I caught a different type of Día de Muertos procession. One sacred to the pre-Columbian cult of Santa Muerte

As with most cultural celebrations, food is one of the main attractions. People of all ages were drawn to the scrumptious smells of tlayuda vendors who set up a makeshift booth in the middle of a crowded cemetery. Their hands worked quickly keeping up with the delicious orders as fast as they could

With satisfied souls, peaceful hearts,&full bellies the secular nighttime parades began. Papier-mâché masked dancers flew to the beat of the brass mariachi bands as fireworks lit their colorful paths. The mural lined streets were painted with memento mori & cozily enclosed with delicate papel picado

Families flock to ancestral tombs to pay respects to the dead. Decorated alters filled with marigold, photos, & favorite foods call the departed souls home to their living families who share stories & enjoy their company. In a crowded cemetery, this niñito takes time to reflect on his lost love one
