Easter in Malaga, Spain. Also known as Holy Week (Semana Santa in Spanish) Easter is one of the biggest religious celebration in Spain with long processions that parade through the city for 7 days. Members of Brotherhoods (cofradías ) take part in the processions, which is a strong tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Also known as ‘penance processions’ they dress in traditional capirote, which used to be for people doing penance: as a sign of atoning their sins, they would walk through the town wearing the hat, their faces covered so they could not be recognised as sinners.
Large floats, or pasos, are adorned with religious sculptures depicting Jesus or Mary. Many brotherhoods have owned and preserved their pasos for hundreds of years.Music also plays an important part in Semana Santa processions - most are accompanied by live marching bands.
