Although extremely popular with human visitors, the site is commonly referred to as the 'Monkey Temple', due to its extensive population of primates. While they are visible throughout the day, they are most active throughout the night and at dawn.

At sunrise, the temple is quiet and still. People move slowly amongst the ancient stupas and shrines in shadows and half-light. Although there are many who have come to pray and pay their respects, the air is filled with a sense of peace and respectful calm.

The ancient Swayambhunath Stupa is considered to be one of the holiest Buddhist sites. At sunrise, the stupa is quiet, but later, pilgrims and visitors will circle the stupa in a clockwise direction, turning the prayer wheels as they go, reciting mantras, prayers, and affirmations.

Prayer flags adorn Swayambhunath. Tibetan Buddhists believe they impart mantras and blessings on the wind, spreading love and good-will to all. From the vantage point of Swayambhunath, Kathmandu is spread out below and sunrise prayers are carried on the breeze to its inhabitants.
