Trr-trr-trr… Have you seen radiation? Probably, no. But you can see the aftermath, while entering the exclusion zone of Chernobyl & Pripyat ghost-city. Now it`s a well-known tourism spot, attracting visitors from all over the world. A trip to the zone begins at the checkpoint. Checkpoint "Dityatki": verification of documents, getting acquainted with your attendant or duty officer. Then – welcome to the ghost city! Believe me: it will be the most exciting travel tour you`ve ever had! Some are coming here to discover this abandoned place after global buzz, which left TV-series “Chernobyl”. But others get even a job here just to be closer to their real, but former home. “That day about 116 thousand people were taken out of this place! In the 20th century, mankind did not know such a mass deportation of people from habitable and populated areas!”, - shared with me his memories Vladimir Verbitsky. He also left with home after Chernobyl disaster, but continues to work here as a duty officer of the exclusion zone. He accompanied me & showed that empty city. Trr-trr-trr… Have you felt radiation? Probably, no. Even here in Chernobyl zone (if you strictly follow the instructions of your guide). In fact, that very radioactive pollution lies here in spots, those spots are well-known, and if you do not step on them, then nothing terrible will happen with you. But you always have to remember how dangerous radiation can be & therefore don`t try to bring home some “souvenir” from Chernobyl. There are a lot of things, lying simply around you: from toys up to clothes & household equipment of that epoch. But each of them can be a source of radiation & bit by bit may irradiate you. “First came a state of elation, solemnity, readiness for everything, but it did not last long, - it is called radiation euphoria. Then it was replaced by nausea, this is a classic reaction to radiation. Only antiemetic pills from the soldier’s first aid kit helped me then”, - told me Alexey Breus, who was in 1986 the operator of the 4th unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. That day Alexey got an exceeded dose of radiation, but managed to survive. Trr-trr-trr… Have you heard radiation? Probably, no. Only radiation dosimeter transmits that sounds: “Trr-trr-trr”. When you`re travelling to the exclusion zone you can take dosimeter with you (it`s not expensive to buy it), otherwise you may ask for it by your guide, they always have it. As you approach the city, the dosimeter may indicate an excess of the norm. Sometimes, opposite the sheltered reactor itself, in windy weather, the norm can be exceeded in 5 or 8 times. But it`s rare and it`s not so awful as it was that night, when the norm was exceeded in thousands times… “Tr-tr-tr… A sudden call that night! I remember, it was approximately 2 a.m. I answered the phone, it was headquarters commander. He said: “Comrade Minister, sorry for the trouble, here we have a small fire at the power plant…”. I cursed, because he wouldn`t call me during the night, if there was really just a small fire… I took a helicopter, mi-8, and flied immediately to Pripyat...”, - remembered during our interview Ivan Gladush, Colonel General of the Soviet Army, who was responsible for the rescue operation. Well, now you can fly over the Pripyat, make kayak-kanoe tour, book transfer through the city – whatever. There are even licensed tour-operators to such an extreme travel destination. After observing empty streets, visiting abonded schools, hospitals & houses, we finish our tour at one of the most visited places in Chernobyl. It is a former amusement park with observation wheel. Time-worn & godforsaken attractions look like a dreadful movie set. Also they remind you – it`s not a movie, it`s a reality, and let`s remember about it. “It`s about how universal the story is. It`s very specific to the Soviet Union, to the Ukraine, but at the same time it`s about the human thing: the way the government lie & the way the individual people rose to challenge it. And it’s a warning to all of us about the cost of ignoring what is true,” – said to me finally Craig Mazin, show-runner of that very TV-Series “Chernobyl”.
