A Feel of Warmth

I didn't expect to find Nigeria

It promised to be an adventurous day with the sun kissing my forehead with such graceful bliss. Feeling enthusiastic, I set out with my family to make memories and explore a new territory. Who would have thought that the peaceful land of Honor and Integrity, Ekiti State, Nigeria, could hold such beauty and thrill? Would you have nursed the idea of travelling out of town to see water? Yes, water! As we set out in the truck to travel to see the Ikogosi Springs of Ekiti State, my mind couldn’t grasp the fact that, water which is common to all was what we drove about 64.3 kilometers to see. I kept my fingers crossed but my mind couldn’t be crossed too. On the road, the family bonding experience is one I wouldn’t forget in a hurry. Maybe because it’s one of the few lingering memories of my dad; his smile, and hair, and laugh, and you definitely don’t want to miss out on any of his jokes, he just had that aura about him. And we could not have arrived in at the Ikogosi Springs without everyone contributing a bit of “did you know?” Though I didn’t know a lot, I was eager to experience things for myself beyond the stories. We eventually arrived at our destination, but I could not quiet my curiosity as I strolled along the different springs there, thinking I’d find something distinct but I didn’t. I didn’t know what I was searching for, but I so badly wanted to see the waters that had drawn me out along side my family in the December Harmattan. The whole place seemed to have been kept and maintained in the wild. The forest green could induce relaxation in any soul. I moved along, through the different streams but couldn’t see the uniqueness in any. I eventually walked up to another who was more familiar with the place, and he showed me to the warm spring and the cold spring. You might probably be wondering if the warm spring had any warmth and if the cold spring was really cold, I did the same myself when I was face to face with what had been news to my ears. Flowing abreast the cold spring is the warm spring and they meet at a confluence, each maintaining its properties. The springs were so close, you could dip your hand in the cold spring and stretch out the other into the warm spring. I was shocked and excited by what nature had done. At some point, I ran hands through the water like there was something else to feel that my hands couldn’t reach. But there isn’t much fun if you don't splash and spill water when you’re surrounded by water bodies. I did not expect to find actual warm and cold water springs but I did. The water never runs out. And I definitely got wet! If you would like visit the Ikogosi Springs, I believe it is better to visit this particular tourist centre in the summer. A gate fee of 500 Naira is required to access the centre. The Ikogosi Springs is situated in a dense forest which extends over a hilly landscape. There are trees tall enough to provide shade for those who come around. To get proper directives on how to find your way to the tourist centre, please use the Google map and feel the Springs’ warmth for yourself. That’s a trip that definitely makes me want to travel again and experience other places in the world. You know, like witnessing other people’s culture, religion, food, history and nature could be altogether inspiring to anyone, especially writers.
