The fall of 2018 during my Global U-grad semester abroad at WVU I gained a lot: a father, a mother, a child, a big sister, a grandpa, and a fiancé. I will start with my father, Edwin from Panama, my fellow Ugrad from WVU. Edwin was the first person I met at the U.S, I met him at the Pittsburgh airport while we were both waiting for our to pick us up. One thing I will never forget is the night of our arrival; I saw a WhatsApp message from Edwin telling me “Don’t forget to pray”. Here, I was astonished, how did he know? I was just about to perform my Islamic night prayer and my Christian friend that I just met is reminding me to pray! Since then, Edwin who’s two years older than me was a father to me. He would always share his life experiences and give me brilliant advises about love, success, and faith. The 2nd person I met in the U.S was my mom, my fellow amazing U-grad Lynn Balmir from Haiti. Lynn and I used to speak French most of the time while we’re together in the U.S, especially during breakfast at Summit Hall when I used to tell her about my love life. I will never forget crying to Lynn at times when I was so distressed and worried, and her confronting me and telling me not to be worried and to leave in in the hands of God. I will never forget her supporting me and praying for my relief and happiness. One of the best things that Lynn told me “Enjoy the moment, it’s in the hands of God. My 3rd best friend in the U.S was the annoying Pakistani Kid Amjad, my fellow Ugrad from Pakistan. Although Amjad was one year older than me, I used to consider him as a son to me, for he always used to get us in troubles. One significant trouble he got us into is the Airbnb reservation in Chicago. Amjad was supposed to reserve for him, Edwin, my Omani girlfriend Maryam, and I two separate Airbnb rooms but he mistakenly booked one. I was one conversation away from booking a one-way ticket to Morgantown that costs $346, all the money I had in my bank account. But thanks God I didn’t, and that was due to my American big sister’s advice Emily. Emily from Global Intervarsity was my favorite American person, she was my big sister. We used to hang out a lot. She used to always drive me whenever I needed to Walmart and other places in Morgantown. Emily is a very religious and wise person. I used to enjoy her telling me bible stories over tea and chocolate. Coming to my American grandpa, who’s not old but wise enough to be a grandpa. Jeremy Meyers from Global intervarsity is the leader of an organization called Global Intervarsity, a Christian organization that helps international students in Morgantown get the best out of their American experience. The most significant event that Global Intervarsity used to have is Friday dinners at Jeremy’s office. Every Friday Jeremy would allocate a sum of money for an international student or a group of students to cook food from their country and invite other international students and Americans. Finally, I’m forever grateful for Jeremy, for he used to organize the Friday dinners in which I met my soulmate and now fiance Abdullah from Saudi Arabia. I did not imagine that I will meet the love of my life halfway across the globe during my Ugrad program. Now you understand the reason why I was distressed and worried crying to Lynn, but no one is more Generous than God, and if He wants something to be, He says be and it would be, so it was! My God granted me the most amazing thing that one could ask for “true love” and concluded my wonderful U.S journey with the engagement to my soulmate. Praise be to God for this amazing journey full of friendship and love.
