It was a cold Tuesday morning in the streets of Nairobi, the capital of city of kenya. We prepared ourselves as we're leaving for a hike at mount longonot park. The place is just 60 km from Nairobi.we had carried with ourselves hiking boots, light clothing, extra drinking water, snacks and picnic lunch. Set ready for the day we left Nairobi for mt longonot which was 2 hrs from Nairobi. It was my first time to hike in one of the least visited conservation park in kenya. The way to the park is typfying the stormy volcanic roots of the great rift valley. After a two hours journey, we made our way to the gate of mt longonot park. The park had a remarkable colossus dominating its surrounding landscape. The mountain rises about 2700 m above and about 750 m above the great rift valley. It has a number of view points. We got ready for the hike. As we started our hike that took 4 hrs from the gate park to reach the rim of the crater and descent back to the gate. The entire mountain is under the jurisdiction of the kenya wildlife services. The park is home to a number of wild animals most of which harbor in the thick forest covering the crater floor. Spotting wildlife is not guaranteed. The path up the mountain was pretty steep and got slippery at some points considering the rains that we're ongoing. The terrain had fine dust, with loose gravel at some areas. The mountain had lava canyons at its steep slopes. The caldera was over a kilometer in diameter. According to fact file ;the mountain is a dormant volcano which last erupted in the 1800 s. It was an fascinating inactive volcano that overlooked the beautiful landscape of naivasha kenya... It delivered us with interesting and inspiring hike culminating into one of the best and exciting views of Kenyan rift valley. The trip hiking background gave us a stunning view of mount longonot which beckons. The trip gave me a glimpse of the unknown which i had never been told about the Kenyan rift valley.. The leaping into the unknown of mount longonot is still breathtaking in my mind.
