A LEAP INTO THE UNKNOWN Just as sir Richard burton would say “ the gladdest moment in human life , me thinks is a departure into the unknown “.Those moment of adventure remain the most exciting moment of my life. As they serve as the only time I feel alive, being able to interact with nature, understanding its voice and answer its call. I wish this could be the course of my life, travelling around the world, experiencing nature, cultures and interacting with different person. Just like the little I have experience in the previous year (2019) during the UNIV Nigeria conference. It was a gathering of Nigerian university undergraduate student, a leadership conference for youth meant to crave an avenue for them to network, share experience, visit different places and be enlighten on the roles the youth play in building a better future for the nation. The title of the conference was “rethinking the future; though several events took place during the conference but I am overwhelm whenever I recall the time spent during the excursion. It was the third day of the conference, we set out to visit two tourist centers across the country which include Ngwo Pine forest and awhum waterfall at Enugu State. We set out very early that morning with an inquisitive mind always eager to know what would happened next. The journey was a bit tedious as we were accosted by several police check point which some had to order everyone to step down for a thorough search ,this wasn’t a new thing since everyone had witnessed such on different occasion while embarking on any journey. We arrived at ngwo pine forest at 8:00am that morning, the grasses were all wet and the morning dew in the forest gives it a smoky appearance, the gallant pine trees all stood elegantly and the early morning chirping of the forest birds were loud. Squirrels hovers around the forest from tree to tree wagging their tails in a sine like wave form. We spent about forty five minutes exploring the remote areas of the pines, taking series of photographs, gathering beautiful flowers and rocks. We finally cluster round a rocky path, had few minutes get together and set out for awhum waterfall. This time we were impatient to see the hilarious waterfall for we had heard so many interesting stories about the waterfall, we arrived at the entrance at about fifteen minutes past eleven that morning and was approached by the guards who inquire about the reasons for our visit, we took about twenty minutes’ walk to the cave, we were instructed by the guards of where we should go and the places we shouldn’t. On entrance into the cave, I felt this oneness with nature I recall the teachings of my high school days about early men and their cave lives. We followed the trace of the little stream flowing out of the waterfall, the wall of the cave were all drifting with water. The stream was filled with different species of fish that glides their fins and move about the transparent water. As we approached the waterfall we all ran into it holding the slimy rocks filled with green algae and spirogyra in order to maintain our stamina, the water lilies in the shallow water were all blooming with their evergreen leaves and glittering flowers and long slender stems .beautiful frogs of different colors hop from one leave to another ,the tadpoles in the water always swim to the surface taking their head above the water to take some air and swimming back to the bottom of the water. The crabs moves around perching on tiny insects and little tadpoles that were unfortunately flushed by the little wave of the stream.as we observed the serene environment, I imagined myself sitting on one of the rocks in a true ZEN position ,meditating and practicing mindfulness with the four elements of nature. We later rounded off our stay and set back to the conference center .visiting new places and experiencing nature has been my dying desire for it makes the unknown to be known, a desire become an experience, gives understanding and reasons to appreciate nature.
