A life dedicated to Science My name is Mylena Peixoto, I am twenty years old and I am from Campos dos Goytacazes, a city located in Rio de Janeiro state – Brazil, and nowadays I study Physics at IFF (Instituto Federal Fluminense/Fluminense Federal Institute). Besides that, I work (as a volunteer) in the Sciences’ field: at The Junior Academy of New York Academy of Sciences, The Mars Generation and The International Journey of Science and Technology, as I divulgate actions engaged to STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and offering solutions for the World’s challenges. I have always been a dedicated student: when I was six years old I already knew how to write and read by myself. The fact surprised a teacher who also observed my behavior, so she concluded that I was a student whose advanced learning abilities and dedication would promote me to an upper grade. So it happened. My diligence paid off. The history of my life also has an important influence in my personality and the way how I fight for my dreams: my family encourages me. My father is the most honest person that I have known and that's why I never give up my plans, he is my hero, he is always motivating me and making me believe in myself. My family is the reason why I am brave and why I am always trying to break my fears and difficulties. Although missing me, they abdicated of my presence as it was necessary I moved – despite being so young - sometimes to study and/or to give speeches and social works about Education. I spent so many months so far away and it was not easy, but it was necessary, and I learned a lot with all these experiences. Also, all the achievements are a result of the reliance that people have about me: people around the world helped me to make some dreams come true, offering me sponsorships and scholarships. I have studied my whole life at public schools and I have always dreamed big. My life changed in 2015, when I was just fifteen years old: the Physics teacher selected me for an astronomical project and I participated in the discovery of five asteroids – this fact ignited my interest in Science. Therefore, I became an active student in the Astronomy’s field, contributing for the Science – as in a project called Eratosthenes, well known around the world. Besides, in 2016 I was selected for a trip to the USA, when I had experiences with directors, scientists and astronauts from NASA and I took a course at Green Bank Radio Observatory, located in West Virginia. This event represented a special moment that made me believe in my future, especially because people from all the country (Brazil) helped me with the transportation and hotel costs. In 2017, I participated in a selective process to get the only one scholarship offered for the International Journey of Sciences and Technology at the NASA Kennedy Space Center International Academy. And, so, I got it. As John F. Kennedy said: “I didn’t wish it because it was easy. I wished it because it was hard”. At the NASA Kennedy Space Center I learned a lot about Robotics, Engineering and Sciences. Also, for my surprise, I was nominated as the International Journey of Science and Technology’s ambassador. It honored me not only as a student, but also as a brazillian woman, being a chance to represent my country for the whole world. My participating in the International Journey of Science & Technology represented a chance to make my dreams come true with the Science, improving my academic career, expanding my experiences, sharing them with many people and making they believe in a better world. I am sure that it was an unforgettable and rewarding experience. I couldn’t imagine all these achievements, but the Education, my family’s support and teachers’ motivation purposed it to me. My life changed completely, and I hope to inspire and motivate young minds to believe in themselves. My mission is to show that we must be brave to give a leap into the unknown, craving for a giant leap for the mankind.
