I arrived at this address my couch surfing host gave to me, but there was no one at the place. I was a bit upset, just a little bit. I knew this would happen at some point, and I knew this is part of this new experience I put myself into. For two weeks, I had started this travelling on 0 cash thing. It was my first time doing it, but I had heard my European friends brag about their cool travelling stories a lot, maybe too much. I was in this big residence compound, a bit far out of the city. There was a public hanging out area and there were some people doing BBQ. The smell was really good. It was almost 10 pm, and I was extremely hungry. I found myself subconsciously walking towards this smell of BBQ. Until somehow I got offered to have a plate and some wine even. I guess I had an appealing story to explain why I ended up at their BBQ at this time, an Asian dude with a big dirty backpack. It was the midsummer day. The day you suppose to abuse the pleasure in this rather northern country. The BBQ people told me all about the midsummer day culture. And they also somehow made me comfortable enough to go to some party in the woods with them. We were walking. But I had no idea where we were supposed to go. I was just following them and fascinated by this night stroll. It was almost midnight but in the sky, there was this obscure brightness still refused to leave. We were entering the nature, walking on the grass, seeing more trees. At some point, there was this mysterious fog coming from somewhere which made everything more surreal and dreamy. Finally, we were in the woods. The trees surrounded us were extremely slim and tall. I looked up and I couldn't see where they end. As we were getting deeper and deeper into the woods, the fog was getting thicker and thicker. I started to hear music from somewhere. There were also other people appearing on and off in the smoke. While the music getting clearer and closer, there were more and more people appearing, a lot more than I expected. Most of them were wearing some shining and colourful costumes. There were also colors and glitter on people's faces, flowers and feathers in people's hair. The smoke and those sparkling little lights around made everyone so celestial and fairy-like. I didn't know when I had lost the people I came with. I looked and looked, there were so many faces here and there, hazy, blurry, deceiving my eyes. I walked away from the crowd and I thought this would cool me down a bit. So I sit on the ground and closed my eyes with some hope that I could recall something to help me find those BBQ people. Suddenly, there was this male voice in an unknown language. I opened my eyes, there was this guy in his working uniform, was talking to me. He realized that I didn't understand his words, and switched to English to ask me if I could help him to make a bonfire. And I said to him, “ Can I just watch you make the fire? I never made a fire before, but I’d love to watch and learn.” The guy started to laugh. I was a bit offended. He walked close to me and said “ Can I give you a hug?” which made me more offended and I said, “ What for? because I don’t know how to make fire?!” He looked at me in the eyes and said “ No, man. You seem so comfortable with yourself. I just love it. What’s your name?” I told him my name and he seemed all amazed and said, “ Man, I called you so many times this afternoon but your phone was off… …” So that's how I met the couch surfing host who stood me up at the beginning of the night.
