Making a local connection Jamaica

And I said smile girl smile Smile for me Jamaica And I said smile girl smile Smile for me Jamaica Telling someone you live in Jamaica causes an explosion of wonder in their mind as they envision a tropical wonderland of lush palm trees, crisp clear ocean and refreshing pure air. I have no problems with this prescribed description of Jamaica but this is normally medication for tourists. As locals, we provide a haven of comfort and adventure for visitors but are sometimes unable to enjoy the fruits of our country. In order to make a connection, we must leave our comfort zone and I did just that. Leaving the confines of the urban trap, otherwise known as the city takes courage. Courage to leave the comforts of a modernized abode with your needs being satisfied at a moment’s notice. I had that courage, I made the first step, I packed my bags and went on that bus ride of faith on the highway of discovery. The destination I had in mind was Westmoreland, Jamaica and my mode of travelling was the bus. Travelling on the bus anchors you to civilization as you come in contact with your people who are from different background and you are all fastened together in this machinery, with heart in heart and soul in soul. The bus was an attempt at a major airline as it provided comfortable seats, in drive entertainment and with frequent stops we all consumed food purchased from local vendors. The meal that stuck out most to me on that trip was a creamy cup of hominy corn porridge sweetened with honey and the secret ingredient that I only can say is … love. Every taste I took of that heated delight took my tastebuds to a sugary wonderland as the honey-infused porridge made everything in life seem much simpler plus the crunch of each corn kernel cracked a new culinary sensation for me. I arrived in Westmoreland, Jamaica birthplace of my ancestors as my family home was established in this parish that I have long forgotten. Retreating back to whence which I came from was created scenes of nostalgia that Steven Spielberg would be envious of. Moments I spent with family that I didn’t know I had created instances of silence then laughter and then culminating in tears as we all found a missing piece of our identity. With my family by my side, I commenced my step into the unknown as it was time to become a man of adventure. There was a beach I discovered , that provided a spiritual home for me as I lost my self glaring into the crystal clear water and with feet firm in the sandy blanket I finally felt at home. This beach was the attachment not only to my country but to my family as we had nights of bonfires, days of swimming , football and feasts that filled my heart, soul and my belly. Leaving the attachments of an urban community sparked the creation of a rounded human being who realises that some of the best things in life can be found within. Within yourself, within your family and within your country. Selah.
