Have you ever lost your memory? It happened to me once... Warm weather, white sand, pure blue water and palm trees have always attracted me. Back in October 2018, I was dreaming of visiting a hot tropical beach in cold winter months. A friend of mine was also seeking to plan an adventurous journey. So, we came easily to the decision to book a flight to a hot exotic country in December. The Far East seemed to be a good option. Vietnam intrigued us the most. An exotic country with vibrant cities and outstanding beach resorts, small authentic villages and unique UNESCO World Heritage sites - a gleam of a culture, quite different and engaging. We spent 10 days touring around Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. We gladly soaked into an explosion of tastes, scents and verdant views of Mekong delta and Halong Bay. Everything was going so smoothly. The trip to my dream destination was about to start. Phu Quoc - an island of magnificent palm tree beaches and other small islands nearby. I was so excited that I couldn’t imagine anything going wrong. The flight landed in the evening at sunset. We had a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, anticipating the island hopping boat tour on the next day. That one I will always remember, as if it was yesterday… I can hear my phone alarm ringing. It is 8:30 am. Our local guide awaits us in the hotel garden to have breakfast and go. “Come on!” he calls. “I am Jack Sparrow! Get on the motorbikes and let’s go to my ship!” I am not willing to drive and get a ride from someone else in the group. We are 9 persons from around the world. It is really nice to meet and connect. The weather is perfect. The sky is bright. No breeze but heat. Thankfully, we are going to jump off the boat to start snorkeling. We dive in. The water is cool and clear, we can see meters ahead. A lot of species with bright colours are right in front of my face. Incredible! We get back to the boat, then stop at several islands. We choose one, quite small, to have a barbecue. White sand and coconut trees, surrounded by crystal blue water. Green calmness and blue quietness! “Do you like the islands? We call them ‘The Small Maldives’.” our guide exclaims in delight. Swimming, sunbathing, having memorable times under the sun, the day passes by. It is almost sunset and we should get back to the hotel. “Do you want to drive on the way back?” someone asked me. “I am not sure...” “Why not? Give it a try, you’re gonna like it!” I do not hesitate and agree. I drive the motorbike alone, confidently along the road. Light breeze touches my face. I can see several pink clouds in the sky, feel the humid and warm air, greenery is all around, the sun is still over the ocean, urging to sink below the horizon. Endless joy fills my mind and heart. I am somewhere, but where... I lay in a bed and see my friend around. The room looks familiar. My leg hurts so bad, my arm too, and that headache, why… “What happened?” I ask. “You fell with the motorbike. You have some serious injuries on your legs and arms but nothing is broken, you hit your head badly. Thankfully, you wore a helmet. You didn’t lose consciousness but probably have а concussion.” I realized I had a serious accident. Several hours of time was just missing from my mind. I could barely walk, but I had to see doctors. Retrograde amnesia, they said. Fortunately, I have successfully recovered physically, except a few scars. No memories from those hours have come back, maybe I don’t need them. Something makes us stumble upon such accidents but something else helps us go through them. What do we call it - fate, superior power, spirit, God… it doesn’t matter. Those accidents happen to us for a reason. To make us stop for a while and think, to teach us, to change us, to make us realize simple, but very important things.
