Hoi An had always been a place cemented firmly at the top of my bucket list Vietnam destinations, not just for its relaxing beaches but also for it’s world famed UNESCO old town; a traditional, olde-worlde Vietnamese neighborhood awash with colour, character, and a healthy obsession with vibrant, glowing lanterns that you’ll find lighting up the streets at night - it’s honestly a sight you must see one day! My time in Hoi An, albeit a little further away from the old town as I would have liked, was spent at a locally designed, owned and operated design hotel by the name of Dechiu. This place I discovered one day whilst scrolling through social media, and naturally I fell in love with its aesthetics and the feeling it created - a spiritually calming space that functioned more like a home from home than a boutique hotel. To me this is the best kind of hotel; it’s personal, approachable and comforting. It was here I met TheO - the mastermind behind the Dechiu concept, and aptly nicknamed ‘The Ocean’ (TheO) given its proximity to the beautiful blue waters nearby. We shared an instant connection - a love for photography, design, and food which accumulated in an opportunity to collaborate together in the production of a graphically design, photography driven media kit for TheO to use to approach design magazines and publications. Never did I think that something like this would happen during my travels of Southeast Asia - it was an honour to have my photography skills noticed! After a week of bouncing ideas, creating photographs together and enjoying the locally sourced food, the media kit was complete! A combined creative effort of myself and TheO the architect and designer. This connection has taught me that no matter where you are in the world, at what stage in your life your are at and who you meet along the way - all connections are important and valuable in their own way. I have always been the kind of person who is in too much of a rush; racing through life so I can see and do as much as I can. TheO taught me that slowing down is the real way to see things.
