An unexpected destination

I didn't expect to find Germany

It all started in an ordinary day of class in the school I went to, in Costa Rica, I received a mail from the administration inviting students to apply to a scholarship in Germany for 3 weeks to learn German through filming courses and normal classes. Most of my classmates thought there was no point in even trying to apply or did not make much effort, even though I knew I could not win I chose to give it a try because… there was a chance, and luckily I, and 2 friends; Isaac and Estefanía, were chosen to travel half the world to Germany. We arrived to a 4 floors hostel in Frankfurt and were assigned rooms of 4, Isaac was in the room to the side, the boys were on the third floor, the girls on the second, and staff on the fourth floor, on the first floor was the lounge and a restaurant, in the hostel there were teens receiving different language courses and other courses. We were invited to a gathering outside of the program, in one of the girl rooms in the floor below, the very first day to get to know each other better and build strong connections from the beginning. My roommate Farid did not think very much of the consequences and lived with the attitude of “you only live once”, his prefrontal cortex as well as most of the people in the hostel was not very developed yet so he invited many friends from our program for a walk in Frankfurt at 10p.m, at about 9.pm our supervisors came to the rooms to make sure everyone was there, as supposed. The plan was to get to truly know Frankfurt at night, so there was Isaac, 2 of my roommates one of his, and 4 girls planning how we were going to escape the hostel, luckily there was a group of people booking into the hostel while we were trying to leave the main entrance, so the receptionist didn’t notice us in case they were told not to let us out. When we put our first steps outside of the hostel, we started running as fast as we could so we could get out of sight from the hostel, we did it, a group of teens were on Frankfurt at 10.pm planning to come back the next day to the hostel to receive classes! We walked and we walked, we saw many clubs, people hanging out, and were planning to climb a skyscraper so we could see the city from above, even though we tried, we could not, so guess what… we kept walking and at like 3a.m or so we came by a street with a weird vibe, there were many homeless people on the street doing hardcore drugs, it was a 200 meter boulevard with bars, there were brothels, and everyone was staring at us, I was genuinely scared someone was going to kidnap or rob us, luckily nothing happened, we entered a small grocer´s shop at the end of the boulevard because we were thirsty and hungry, I didn’t want to stop there because it was risky but I ended buying a KitKat, I wanted to get as far from there as we did from the hostel. After that we chose to head back to the hostel which was so many miles far, because we walked so much, we ended arriving by sunrise, we had classes just in a few hours, I slept so little I only remember this much about the experience because of the big sensations I felt, the next day we were walking zombies, but quite happy we did something were definitely not expecting.
