Far lands some time later become closer, even if you do not expect it to happen. As I did not expect to visit a charming place in Greece called Meteora when I was watching a movie about it. Back then it seemed so unreal to see that place with my own eyes that I did not even dare to dream about a trip there. But life is more interesting than we can imagine… Two years later I came to Greece as an exchange student and started exploring this fabulous country. Every little walk was as a big historical expedition. Here and there I could see the excavations, the ancient buildings and a heritage of vast achievements. And some time later – a trip to Meteora. It was a sunny day at the beginning of March. There was a strong wind but the air was warm. A ride on the twist mountain roads showed me so exciting views and at the same time reminded me how sharp turns can be. As sharp as a course of events in our lives. Meteora is a rocky hill that translates from Greek as “suspended in the air”. Definitely once you there you feel something celestial about this place. I was walking around examining every brick of those buildings and every leaf on the bushes. This place is full with monasteries which existed here many centuries ago. Hermit monks were settling down in Meteora trying to escape worldly vanities. They lived in the caves and gathered sometimes for a common prayer. Access to the monasteries on the hills was complicated. Rope ladders were a method to protect monks from prying eyes and another way to show frailty of earthly existence because their using put lives at risk. The most striking thing about that trip happened to me when I entered one church. It was dark there as in all other premises. There was an iconostasis in the center, a lectern with a book and a small window that transmitted sunlight. Contemplating that thin sunray, I thought to myself that it is the only connection with outer world, the only memory about it that monks have. But it is so slight and just sank in this darkness. The whole church was like a metaphor of local monastic life. Monks spend most of their time here, praying, communicating with Someone who is the most important in their lives. People who live in the mountains left everything behind and dedicated the God everything they have. Once they came to Meteora a new life started for them. A cassock hid their individual features and they received a new name that symbolizes a new person, a new life they began. The monks chose the life of a hermit and that is why they had to leave their relatives and friends, jobs and previous habits. Traditional types of satisfaction were changed to another sort of pleasure – a possibility to reach a huge affinity with the Creator. There is a whole world out there, behind that window. But they do not already care about it. Worries of the world do not bother them anymore. It is not like they were deprived of simple human feelings or emotions. Material body keeps the necessity to take care about mundane affairs. Life did not stop for them but also has ups and downs. But what kind of life is it? And why did they choose it? Some monks say that it does not really matter what kind of reasons led them to the monastery. The only thing that matters why they stayed there. If one may travel to Meteora can see beautiful nature, the old buildings of monasteries and a pile of tourists taking photos. But if you take a careful look you might get a peek into a mysterious life of people who live in these mountains.
