I never expected to find love 4,871.16 miles away from home. I remember being at Chicago O'hare on my 25th birthday awaiting to embark a flight to Bali, Indonesia. It was the furthest I had ever traveled to on my own, but I was going through a quarter life crisis so can anyone really blame me for wanting to go as far from home as possible? Twenty-three hours later, I finally landed at Denpasar airport. I immediately turned on my Wifi and googled, “what is the Uber of Bali”, to avoid getting scammed by taxis. I secured my ride on an app called Grab and made my way to Ize Seminyak. The first two days, I only managed to get a pedicure, visit some local shops, restaurants, and spent a lot of time at the hotel pool. I don’t know how I wallowed in self pity while being in this beautiful country, so when day 3 rolled around I started making moves. I was waiting for my to-go lunch at a spot near my hotel when I met Sophian. I recall admiring his posture. He was sitting up so straight, confident and comfortable in his own skin. His perfectly tan skin. He looked up at me as I was overanalyzing him in a totally not creepy way, in fact, I think he was flattered considering he got up and moved to sit right next to me. Then he spoke. When I say I have never experienced love at first sight, I mean that. This was love at first words. Like the gentleman that he is, he introduced himself in all his french accent glory. I was ready to be swept away with words. I just wanted to hear this man continue to talk to me nicely. His energy, his voice, his demeanor, the way he looked at me with his kind eyes–I wanted that forever even though I had just met him. A strawberry margarita later, my to-go order was ready. Naturally, we both knew our time was ending. He walked me to my hotel and we exchanged numbers. He text me as I was still walking towards the elevator, my heart racing as I read his message asking if I wanted to go out later that evening. He took me to a beach bar called La Plancha. We sipped mojitos and talked the night away until we got asked to leave because they were closing. We both didn't want our night to end so he took me for a ride around town. It was my first time on a motorcycle, so I was having the best time of my life cruising the island. He dropped me off at my hotel afterwards and we kissed goodbye. It was one of those slow passionate kisses. I could hear and feel his breathing and moaning perfectly in sync with mine. I went to sleep with butterflies in my stomach that night. I spent the rest of my vacation with him. In the morning, I would wake up first. I’d make coffee and head out for a walk to the beach to sunbathe. I’d get back and Sophian was always in the patio of my hotel room, having coffee and a cigarette. Then we’d have breakfast together, give each other some alone time and reunite to explore together. Everyday with him felt like a fairytale. Fast forward three and a half weeks later, I had to fly back home. That day was also his birthday. It was then that I realized we had both been there on solo birthday trips. I wanted to stay an extra day so badly, I mean I had just found out my perfect love is also an Aquarius! That flight home was so depressing. When I got home though, I talked with Sophian. We decided to move forward with a long distance relationship. That same year, I got to spend a month visiting him in Nice, France. He came to Chicago too. And we met each other in L.A. Mexico as well. I love our love and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us.
