I have never travelled outside of my home country, however, my brother, our friends, cousins and I, once we were old enough, saved our school money to cover our expenses for a family trip to Tobago. It was the 16th of August 2019, the day of our trip had arrived and I was braiding my hair briskly trying to go against the morning sun. Something just felt different about this particular morning, maybe it was because I was able to watch the sunrise or the crisp atmosphere, perhaps, the birds harmonizing as the chilly morning winds passed through my windows, danced in my hair and kissed my yellow undertone skin or it can be all. It was 8 a.m. and what do you know my five minutes of relaxation turned into an hour of shut-eye. My parents came and started to rush my brother and me because time was of the essence. They seemed to be considerate that we do not miss our boat right? They were excited to have their weekend of relaxation from exuberant teens. I remember my cousin taking a picture of me sleeping on my K.F.C cup and how calm we had to behave so that strangers would not view us as little kids who ‘never see come see’ as they say it. It’s not like we do not have mirrors and windows at home but on Virtu Ferries it felt like we were rich kids and living the dream. Tobago is not that far but by boat, it felt like we were not reaching our neighbours any time soon. For the time being, we ventured the new ferry of Trinidad and Tobago, Jean De La Valette, Virtu Ferries. We finally reached our destination, got our rental vehicle and drove to Enchanted Waters, our temporary abode. Our first day we decided to cook and lounge by the pool because we were all boat lagged. Midnight met us in the pool and we were all prune-like and shivering. Nothing could have made this first-night experience better, but the comforter of the bed, air conditioning in the room and the eldest male and female making diner and serving it to us younger teens who watched television corrected me. It is early, 7 a.m. and I am being jumped on a dragged off my bed, August 17th, first destination Argyle waterfall and just like true Trinidadians we all were late to our tour. This was a very long drive with too many hills and turns to count and of course keeping with our culture, we had to stop and buy drinks and roti skin along the way to go with our menu of curry chicken, mango and potato. Not to mention when we had passed all the shops, parked, unloaded the vehicle and sat on the huge rocks to eat is when we realized that we forgot the plates So we began chopping down fig leaves to use as plates like our ancestors did and washed them in the trickling stream. We saw many historical sites on the way back and we even passed through an isle of trees and flower curtains of many colours arching all around us like a fairy tale, it felt unreal. It was night once again we all went to the movies and saw Hobs and Shaw. August 18th, it is 7 a.m. and we all have to enjoy our last day. We made a huge breakfast, bacon, eggs, sausage, fry bake, and swiss miss tea. There was a beach fifteen minutes away from our resort which we spent our last hours soaking in and the boys ran to the resort once we had finished. We packed and said our goodbyes to the manager. At the port I bought as many Tobago goodies I could afford to bring for my parents, even though our trip was expensive and we did not get to do much that was out of the ordinary, the experience of venturing beyond the borders of Trinidad was a leap into the unknown which I did not anticipate to find such beauty in small Tobago, but, Tobago surprised me even with just how unpolluted it was.
