It's so amazing, so inspiring, to have acquired knowledge, as a Physiotherapist, these past thirty (30 ) years. It feels good to give back to humanity, irrespective of boundaries, or distance, and the joy is limitless! Organizing medical outreaches is one thing that I love doing. Connecting with people in far away climes, and taking away their burdens can be so exciting, so fulfilling. We need to reach out to people, who are not from our immediate environments, or from the same ethnicity, adding value to their lives and making them happy. Most times we need to break boundaries- financial boundaries, emotional boundaries, cultural boundaries, fear of acceptance, fear of adaptability, in a new clime, to be able to achieve this. Though it takes a strong will to break these barriers, but the gains are enormous, to us, and to people from remote origins. God is happy about this. Sometime last year, I started having a burden for the sick, and my mind was fixed on a remote settlement. I had to educate them about health issues, and attempt to make them enjoy better lives! I had to collaborate with other health workers, and specialists in their own fields. They demanded money, which I did not have, and my lack of finance, and thoughts of a good team to work with, created a boundary, in my mind. I wrote to a Pharmaceutical Company to solicit for finance. I also solicited help from an acquaintance in the United States. I worked hard, believing God for the best! About two weeks from that time, I had an opportunity to run an advert for the pharmaceutical company, which paid enormously! God did more than I was expecting. I also had my requests from my friend in the United States granted. Wao! God was in all these. One thing I've noticed, is that in as much as your purpose is right, as in touching lives, and you are passionate, and earnest about it, God is also ready to support you. Armed with the necessary funds, I was confident to make that trip, to reach out. I travelled to the town of Makogi. My first assignment there was to do a publicity campaign, in the town square, familiarizing with the environment and the people. I was able to catch the attention of a good number of the indigenes. Some helped us in the publicity campaigns. We were trying to bring an ophthalmologist to consult free of charge, and likewise I was also ready to screen for disability and offer management tips. My wife, a midwife was ready to educate the women. We were also bringing a health insurance manager to convince the people in that remote area to buy into health insurance. Our purpose was right! Yes. Making the connection with the people, became increasingly enhanced. I requested to talk to the traditional ruler, as custodian of authority, which is the case in most African countries. An understanding of the cultural norms and values will enhance the chances of a traveller to make the right connections. We were not only authorized, but we were given a desired location and space to use. We visited the town, on about three more ocassions, to consolidate our rapport, and expand our connections. We were good to go. On the allotted days of the outreach, in November 2019, we had space to use, we were welcomed, we received the needed assistance, based on our strong rapport, and we were able to administer counsel and therapy without hindrance. One important thing when travelling is to have phone numbers and social media handles, of the people you interacted with. The barriers were completely broken, and we carried out our purpose, imbibed a new culture, and made new friends. Some of them still get in touch, professionally, or to socialize. Travelling is most fulfilling, and exciting, especially when you have a good purpose like planning to add value to an aspect of life in the intended communities.
