Have you ever heard of a tribe called Toda? No right! Even I haven't. Toda Tribe is located in Ooty. And its quiet interesting for textile and fashion designers as there is too much to get inspired from the art, artist and region. The Toda Tribe is as beautiful and different as it sounds. Allthough the people of this tribe are so overwhelming and loving, they have this interesting fact that the men of this society don't earn but the women are the one soul earning for their living. The women of this society has the excellent hand craft knowledge of embroidery which is named after their tribe called 'Toda Embroidery'. This craft looks so interesting and eye catchy and also its difficult to identify the wrong side of the embroidery as its so beautifully designed and finished. Although the craft looks simple and elegant but its difficult to make it, as its done by counting the yarn of the fabric. But the ladies does it with so much ease that it looks soothing for ones eye. One cannot believe this that a 90 year old lady makes this embroidery & that too so passionately. I don't think I have ever seen someone so determined towards their passion. They make different products which have toda embroidery. They make hand bags, pillow covers, necklaces, purses, etc. They follow christian religion as they are influenced to do so. But let me tell you that the people of this society are so well educated that despite of staying in a village where they don't have much facilities, they can speak fluent english, & their native language is Tamil. Despite of following Christian religion they have their own temples, where they dont allow any woman to visit, only men ofcan visit their temples. This tribe don't have much popularity as others. They have these small village where a group of 30-40 people stay together but un different house. The food for all 30-40 people is cooked together. They have around 25-30 small villages located all over in Ooty. I have visited 3 villages & let me tell you these people are so free to share their knowledge to any person asking for it. A family of one village also served us with their local tea which i think you can't find anywhere. I just have one line which I think could best describe this tribe is : "They are not rich by money, but by heart".
