You can travel around the world but what is it which makes a place what it is? Its geographical location? The topography of an area? The buildings and architecture? All of these contribute to the literal definition of a place. However, I believe it is the people that makes a place what it truly is. Each individual exerting a small amount of magic like a star. Everyone coming together to create a beautiful constellation. Community. The city of Florence is famous for the Renaissance. It is rich with culture and art. Even though the city is best known for its past it is still full of life today. Life that is thriving with people in all walks of life. The people who keep the culture alive. From the shot of espresso in the morning to the family orientated lifestyle. In the centre of the city proudly stands the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Carefully crafted from marble and brick. It looked as if it was taken straight out of a sketch book making all the other buildings inferior to it Despite its undeniable beauty it it not just a pretty face but a place saturated with culture and religion. Even though the city is rich with history the people are breaking new ground for the next generation. I met a passionate young couple starting a new Church with the vision to bring all the population of Florence to Christ. Marco compared their goal to the Michelangelo painting "The Creation of Adam". In the painting Adam and God are reaching out to each other however if you look closely there is a small gap between their fingers. He suggested that this is God reaching out to the people but they are currently distant however he wants to help fill this gap by connecting people to God's love. The Church has been meeting in cafes and restaurants around Florence where people have been making strong relationships with each other. As well as having a relationship with God. People gathering together and creating connections is beautiful in itself. It shows you don't necessarily need outstanding architecture in a city to create something breathtaking. The people are the artwork of the City. Even after returning home from Florence it will always have a place in my heart and not just in my mind. Yes I will remember the physical beauty of the city and its architecture. However, it is the people that make it magical. They are the magic of the city. I pray for the people in Florence and all around the world during the outbreak of coronavirus. That God will protect them and the community stays strong.
