Chirpy birds flying to their nests, the calm breeze of the evening awaken my mind and the dark roads became much darker as we made our way to Idanre community to shoot a video of the coronation ceremony of Abiiye of Idanre land. I was 16 years plus then in my final year of Secondary school and I thought to learn apprenticeship in order to sustain my University Education after secondary school graduation. I got enrolled into digital video cover aging school under an Islamic cleric who was a senior friend. As we approached the town I checked my watch and discovered that the journey had taken us over 11 hours and yet had not arrived at the village of Idanre. But as soon as I lifted up my eyes I saw a red clay soil just some distance ahead and their brighten up my expectation that we were close to the village. Initially I was excited when I was told we were going to travel for video shooting of a coronation ceremony which was going to be overnight. I have heard a lot of interesting stories about the town of Idanre in Ondo State Nigeria before but I didn’t know it was what I was about to experience. 30 minutes after seeing the clay soil we finally arrived at the sight and it was 7:30pm. It was obvious both of us were tired and would desire nothing other than sleep but the ceremony was to kickstart by 9pm and we had better get our equipment ready. So we started organizing our equipment and meeting and discussing with the organizers of the events. At first they brought a meal to us and as I was about to eat my boss told me not to. According to him I would sleep once I eat and we won’t be able to work. So I had to obey and of course I didn’t eat. Shortly after they took us to the site where they were killing animals for the event. They have already slaughtered 7 rams and 7 pigs and 7 goats so we took the coverage of the killings. As soon as the event started the woman traditional ruler arrived by 10pm and started dancing to a very unusual song called ijala music with native priests all over her. According having danced for 1 hour she was to marry 7 men that same night and so as soon as it was 11pm the 7 men arrived and started sleeping with her that’s intercourse. That’s the way the ceremony is. After marriage she’s to have the seven men as her husbands. Then as soon as it was 12am she was taken inside for the final ritual ceremony and there we were told she was to eat human parts and drink human blood after which she will fully become an Abiiye. There, inside we were not allowed to go inside to cover her in video. As soon as she came out of the room by 2am, her eyes were extremely red and she became very dull. When she went inside and never come out for like 3 hours I was afraid to eat and to sleep and was rather handling cameras so I won’t sleep. At the end the woman danced till 4am and there came the close of the ceremony because ordinary people must not witness it. Afterwards my boss told me to sleep and rest and I told him I couldn’t neither was I going to eat until we leave the place and then I will buy food outside the village. When we eventually left the village it was a big sigh of relieve to both us. We had not experience a scene like that all our lives. I told my boss right in the car that I was quitting from video shooting and that I was not interested anymore. The money he gave me as part of my work that night I couldn’t spend it and had to return it to him. It was an experience I never would want to relive again.
