The sun is shining, putting a sparkling haze over the ocean, while I am sitting in the shade of a palm tree, sipping on my cocktail and pining for the hot surfer guy coming straight out of the water. He turns around, looking straight into my eyes, his lips forming a seductive smile... "Hey, Bettina?! Bettina, we asked you something!" Slowly the bright dream turns back into grey reality, bursting like a soap bubble, when I realize Max and Aaron staring at me, waiting for an answer. It is freezing cold. Snow all around and the bottle of tequila in my hand almost empty. "Which bar do you want to go to tonight?" the boys ask me again. Dejected I am kicking into a heap of muddy snow. "Which bar I want to go to tonight?" I am almost screaming at Max and Aaron with tears in my eyes. "I am done with that every day same life we are having at the moment. It is time for a change, time to experience something, to live our lives! I want to feel the ocean breeze in my hair, sand under my feet and drink a Cuba Libre on the beach in Cuba, not in a bar here in Vienna! It is time to stop dreaming and start doing..." Max and Aaron look at each other, confused and not sure how to respond. They are in party mood, quite drunk and ready to hit the dance floor. "What would you do if you would have a wish?" I ask them. The boys seem to be overstrained with this question, which doesn't really matter to me since I keep on talking immediately. My just now melancholic mood turns into pure determination. I jump on the next park bench and keep on with my speech. "Let's do something unexpected, something we would love to do, but didn't dare to so far!" Still not sure what I am talking about, Max asks me what I want to do then. I smile, take a deep breath, jump off the bench and say, "I have a plan! Let's go to the airport and ask for the first cheapest flight to a warm destination outside of Europe, one-way!" While everything seems to make so much sense to me in this moment, the guys first start laughing at me, saying that I am totally going nuts now, but as soon as they realize that I am serious about it, they start to enjoy my idea. Of course all three of us are drunk already, but still I know deep inside, that I would not regret what would be coming now... Ten minutes... That's the time everyone of us gets at home to pack. I am standing totally lost in front of my wardrobe. Panic spreads for a moment while I am thinking about what to take with me. Ten minutes, no idea where we would go and for how long. More and more questions come into my mind, but still the biggest fear I have right now is, that one of the guys would pull back. I made my decision. Of course it makes me nervous, not really knowing what is going to happen, but it feels awesome, I feel awesome, free and fully alive! On the way to the airport we pass by a Cuba poster hanging somewhere on a wall. It makes me smile because for me it is a sign that we are doing the right thing, even though we don't know yet where we would go. To be honest, it doesn`t really matter to us anyways, where we would go, as long as we would go. And there we are. We enter the departure hall of Vienna airport. Not many people here in the middle of the night, no queue. The lady at the ticket counter is not sure what to think about the situation, when Max, Aaron and I, three obviously drunk young people, ask her for random one-way tickets, but she does her job and all three of us think the same, when she tells us the destination of the next cheapest flight: FATE! And so the adventure begins. Bienvenidos a Cuba!
