2:00 am, My husband gently nudges me. it's pitch black outside. I have slept just long enough to rest my brain, but my eyes are still heavy. Everything we own is loaded in the back of two U-Haul trucks, that's right I said two. The first one wasn't big enough, even though we had rented the largest truck U-Haul makes. Who knew we had that much stuff? I drag myself off what used to be our leather couch. It is time. We were only a day and a half behind schedule. My son and I use the flashlight on our smart phones to make sure we weren't leaving anything behind. Our chihuahua puppies clinging to my side, I think they thought they were going to get left behind. After everything was checked and double checked we loaded up for the long drive ahead. My husband in one U-Haul, his hired friend in the 2nd and my son, the puppies and I in our newly purchased BMW. I prayed we would have no car problems along the way. Slowly I backed out of the driveway of a house that was never really mine. Leaving behind everything I had ever known, including my family, my friends and my oldest son, who decided to stay with my parents to finish high school. Leaving cactus, mountains and the beautiful red rock landscapes behind. Heading south for the ocean. Home sweet Arizona was to be no more. We were trading all either of us had ever known for something totally new and different. For months we plotted out where we would go, never dreaming Texas would be an option let alone the winning state that was to be our home, but when the cost of living is cheap and you dream of living by the ocean, there are not many other domestic places in this country we could go. So, we sold our house, pulled up anchor and sailed away. Destination Corpus Christi. I had spent 3 days in Corpus Christi once about fifteen years ago, my husband had never even set foot in any part of Texas, we were going blindly with nothing more than a leap of faith. We had 1700 miles ahead of us and I was already feeling tired. I cranked up my playlist and began to drive. My husband in U-Haul number 1 in the lead, us in the middle and our rented friend in U-Haul number 2 bringing up the rear. As I said we were a day and a half behind and we had to reach El Paso for some business by 10. It was going to be a long day. In Tucson we stopped to say our goodbyes to my sister, my brother-in- law and my new baby nephew. Starbucks was going to be my best friend that morning. Three hours in and I already needed a nap. After Tucson, the rest of the morning was a blur We passed through a lot of nothing, only to reach more nothing, followed further by even more nothing. Barren sights as far as the eyes could see. The little towns we did pass through offered us the occasional restroom, a place to stretch and let the dogs out of the car. We reached El Paso later than we had hoped, but luckily our business was willing wait. Exhaustion had set in. I needed to rest my eyes. A short nap was all I would get. We had to reach San Antonio next to deliver the trailer we picked up in El Paso. Driving through Texas is not an easy feat especially having to tow a trailer in an already overloaded U-Haul. The hours ticked on. I finally had to sleep. We pulled over at a rest stop along interstate 10 to close our eyes. Curling up on top of luggage, I finally slept. Around 3 am my husband was knocking on the window. It was time to get on the road again. We got to San Antonio somewhere around Thursday and Finally on Friday morning we reached our destination. Corpus Christi. There it was the ocean. We were finally home. Our new life is waiting.
