In the ancient Georgian chronicles Khevsureti and Pshavi are mentioned together in the name of "Pkhovi". The region is famous with its culture handicrafts and martial art-“Khridoli.” There are found numerous archaeological artifacts since Bronze Age confirming the prehistoric existence of indigenous populations’. Pshav-khevsurians have many myths, legends and folk tales among them the mythology about “Devs”. Devs were the evil spirit in Georgian mythology and folklore and according to the Khevsurian legends. They lived in the Piraketa Khevsureti in the villages: Roski, Likoki, Tsikhegori, and Gudamakari in the so called former Devs” habitat Dinipkho. Constructions in the area of their possible habitat look very impressive. The walls were very professionally built dryly from the huge stones. They look too well constructed in comparison with local structures. In 1970-th information about possible existence of Bigfoot, Sasquatch or Yeti hairy and upright-walking, creatures were very popular. Information about similar beings could be finding too in local myths, legends, and various not confirmed reports of observers in Georgia. In the early summer of the 1979 my friends George, David and I decided to visit Shatili, Khevsureti and its unique medieval fortress with picturesque environment and interview local population on the folklore and legends about “Devs”. In 1970-th transport connection to Shatili was not well organized; therefore after taking the regular bus to the nearest settlement Barisakho we have to move to the board of Soviet truck GAZ-51 to reach the final destination. Words can not describe the beauty of the nature viewed from the truck’s board. Surrounded by snowy glaciers, the Argun Gorge was reminding a path to the fabulous world. It was night when we arrived at the entrance road to Shatili that was washed away by river. The driver offered us to stay in the sheep shepherd’s camp at the bank of the river Arghuni. After an hour of walk we arrived at the camp in the mystical beech forest, at the riparian part of the river. Soon, we herd unfriendly barking of huge Georgian hounds that turned to us. Fortunately, one of the shepherds yelled at the dogs and called them back. The shepherds met us friendly and invited to the dinner mainly constituted from milk products and “Jipitauri,” light local wild fruit spirit. One of the shepherds was former school teacher. When we told him about our interests he smiled and promised to tell us about “Devs”. “’Devi’ looked like humans, but taller and their body was covered by fur as fox’s body. They were very strong, but when fighting with humans they had measured their’ power,” said Shepherd. “They were authorized from “creator” not to use more force than the humans had. Sometimes they used to establish friendly relations with humans.” “It has strange habits. In case, if human killed Devi his/or her family was always afraid of their revenge. “Devs could not fight against man with the gun, because, if gunman noticed the “Devi” and just shoot it without a sight the bullet will kill “Devi”,” continued Shepherd. “When someone shot “Devi” its body disappeared and only ears were escaped. The person who killed the Devi might always have to keep its ears with him; otherwise the Devswould find him and kill, “finalized Shepherd. “It sounds great” said David.” They might have been ‘bio robots and were following ‘Three Laws of Robotics,” continued David with smile. “What about Yeti, Bigfoot and Sasquatch many people claim that they have met them. I think they might have been Devi’s relatives.” Our comments were followed by George’s pompous speech: “Some time ago Devs lived on the territory of today Khevsureti. The Devs were living within their farms had cattle farming and agriculture. They were good blacksmiths. They were physically strong and terrorized entire population, ancestors of Pshav –Khevsuretians, their shrines, women and killed people. The Highlanders asked for support their shrines. Khvtis Shvilni – a group of demigods of pagan pantheon of Georgia. They selected Iagsar and Kopala for the battle against Devs who destroyed all of them. Since, that time Devs became invisible.” The Next day George, David and me said goodbye to hospitable shepherds and continued our way to make the new leap into the unknown.
