In January of 2019 the world was enamored with the release of not one but two documentaries about the greatest party that never happened, Fyre Fest. Maybe the biggest failure the music festival industry and young millennial socialites has ever experienced. The films illustrated both the fraudulent, con-artist ways of washed up rappers and conniving executives but also, without knowing, inspired travel. Highlighted throughout the documentaries was the exotic waters and sand bar beaches of Great and Little Exuma. The Caribbean’s answer to that of the Maldives, Tahiti or Bora Bora. Not to mention, way more attainable travel time for an 8 and 4 year old. When low tide hits and the ocean recedes leaving what my four year old son coined the Exuma Blues. To this day, we strive to find the perfect bath bomb combination to match the Exuma blue-turquoise-cerulean-mint-sea foam waters. We are island people. We found inspiration to discover a lesser known island of the Bahamas from a Netflix documentary about Ja Rule. So we booked our flights, talked eight of our closest family members into coming with us! We narrowed down our timeframe to April around Spring Break as well as another pleasant surprise, the Bahamas National Family Island Regatta. You see, my family of four love the soft sand beaches and bathtub water of the Caribbean having been to many places including Mexico, DR, Martinique, Jamaica and Aruba. But nothing compared to the people and the island of Exuma. We stayed in a little hotel right in Georgetown as well as an AirBnB in Little Exuma. With locals as colorful as the ocean at low tide we had a blast retracing some of the iconic drone scenes from the documentaries like Exuma Point Resort and Restaurant. Of course, swimming with the pigs was on the agenda. And really finding inspiration for picture perfect beaches at Chat N Chill on Stocking Island. Traveling with family and so many people is always interesting especially when your rental car loses a wheel in the middle of making a turn going to pick up the rest of your party waiting at a beach at sunset. A testament to the people of the Bahamas as a local in a pickup truck told us to hop on the bed and gave us a ride back to the house saving us from the mosquitoes at dusk. We wouldn’t change these experiences for the world and look forward to returning to match that perfect bath bomb color of the water at Jolly Hall beach and those Exumas Blues.
