There was me, 21 years old, never before traveled out of my home country, facing the complete unknown about the procedures and the expectations of what it would be. I am Brazilian and around here, isn't common this travel life for young adults alone. So, let's go. First, the check-in into American Airline's guiche. A ton of questions, like what are you going to do in the US? Why have you chosen the US? Do you ever travel internationally before? ' - okay, I know that the USA has to protect against terrorism and other stuff, but, for the first time... this can put you in a nervous situation even you are totally good-to-go.' Inside the plane, of course, the first impressions! Interesting. International flights have many more amenities than regular domestic flights. Instructions on English ' - Here I was thinking: worth it so far study hard English for seven years, I can understand they speaking, so exciting!' So, eight hours later, there was me in Miami, for the immigration part. It is strange the number of people waiting on the line. Some crying, some laughing, even some yelling and being carried by officers. ' - Okay boy, you are going to their home... so are their rules alright, keep the anxiety cool, and wait for your turn.' And here we go: - Good afternoon, welcome to the United States! - Thank you, Sir!. (gave my papers) - Where are you going? - New York. - Traveling alone? - Yes Sir. - Hm... (while checking every single information on papers) so, you are saying, that a 21 years old young adult, is coming for one's the biggest economic city in the hole world... alone? - Yes Sir (firmly, but inside, start thinking, he will send me home) - Did you travel internationally before? - No Sir. - And why New York? (curiosity face with a little smile that I readen: convince me to get in) - And I still need to explain? Central Park, Empire State, Liberty Statue, History Museum, 5th Avenue... - Alone? - Yes, my first time, why not? - Hm... okay. Welcome to the USA. Enjoy your stay, and say hello to NY for me. (with a smile) - Sure, thank you! Trust me! It can make you shake your legs more than a cellphone vibration. And if it is not enough... While waiting for the second flight. I was searching for any communication brand to solve my communication problem. When I found a store, I asked for a cell chip (here in Brazil, we do not use SIM Card, we name it only chip... like computer chip) and the attendant was looking me with a face as she ate something sour... and said: ' You want to say SIM Card right?' Immediately my face turned red as a tomato, and she started to laugh with me ... and I just said... ' - First time. (with a shy red face remembering of potato chips, imagining she was thinking in a potato for the cellphone). With the SIM Card working and arriving in New York with the bag full of anxiety and embarrassment. There was I in the big apple. Things I will never forget about my first experience. Be ready for unusual general behaviors; this is just a culture different from yours. Make a joke when you seem silly for other cultures; after all, you are being silly. The unknown can be much more pleasant than you think. With the internet, and good wish of some stranges, I discovered that traveling is not only what makes my hearts say to me I am alive, but, is a lifestyle. The best advice I can give to you: do not have afraid. First-time, why not?
