I want to talk to you about Belgium, a country where I have lived a piece of my life and that will remain in my heart and mind forever. The feeling of living in Belgium is the feeling of living in a truly unique country. A country with many contradictions and many oppositions. Considered by many as the landmark united Europe for its strategic position and for being the seat of almost all the institutions of the European Union. The capital is Brussels and the official languages of the kingdom are: French, Dutch and German. They are a Constitutional Monarchy and the royal family belongs to the Saxe Coburg Gotha dynasty. Unfortunately Belgium lived in its history, a lot of unpleasant episodes. In 1956, more than two hundred people died in the Bois du Cazier coal station following a fire, mostly from central-southern Italy. The morning after the tragedy, the newspaper "Le Soir" wondered about the possibility of starting to hire labor from other countries such as Spain and Greece because apparently the Italians were beginning to claim too many rights. At that time, coal was a subject that was a reference point for the economy of Belgium, a country signatory to the Treaty of the European Coal and Steel Community. For the football fans, Belgium remains a bad memory for the world of football since in 1985 the European Champions Cup final was held in the stadium near the complex structure of the Atomium. Following a serious scuffle by the Liverpool Hooligans against a segment of Juventus middle-class fans, 39 people died. That tragedy went down in history as the Heysel disaster. That tragedy was unfortunately the result of the social problem that gripped English society with the extreme supporters of the football teams who at the time caused many problems inside the stadiums. In the northern part of Belgium, the Flemish reside. A region of ancient Dutch heritage that over time has outlined its own originality that also makes them different from the Dutch. They are ancient adversaries of the royal family and would opt for independence more quietly, given that they feel distant from the Walloon cousins for economic and cultural reasons. In Flanders you can visit the cities of Antwerp, Bruges, Gent, Malines and Ostend, the seaside town that has hosted the American soul singer Marvin Gaye for a long time and where it is presumed to have culturally produced: "Sexual Healing". The French-speaking part of Belgium is called Wallonia. Provided that you speak French, in some enclaves the official language is German due to the different shifts of land from Germany to Belgium following the peace treaties of the Great War. Eternal rival of Flanders and rural land, famous for its abbeys and tasty beers. Certainly the great cycling passion of people and the magnificent importance of some cycling races that take place annually. Land of revolutionary inventions. The city of Liege has given us the waffle. The small Dinant is the land of the saxophone, in fact there Adolphe Sax invent the magic instrument. Brussels, the capital is literally and physically suspended between the Latin world and the Germanic world. Although it is a bilingual city, the most practiced language is French and the style and architecture of the buildings is clearly Flemish. Victor Horta is one of the most famous architect of "Art Nouveau" style and the tapestries are really widespread in the city. Be careful to talk about Brussels. The city itself is small but it is the agglomeration of 19 municipalities that make it almost similar to a dynamic and constantly moving metropolis. Brussels is also the hometown of famous singer Jacques Brel. The Grand Place (the main square) can safely be considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. In the historic center you can also admire the staircase of "Mont des Arts", the picturesque Manneken Pis, the popular district of Marolles which has hosted the Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel for years. In the city center it can also be useful to visit the comic book museum to learn about the greatest comics such as: The Adventures of Tin Tin, Spirou, Lucky Luke and the Smurfs.
