Somewhere between Cardiff and Newport, Wales, inside a bus, I met an American woman. I could describe the climate that day as the typical British weather: it was raining, cold and windy. I was born in Brazil, so weather like that was completely different for me. At that time, I had spent 20 years in my home country and I was not used to that cold. I was wondering about the differences between Brazil and the UK when the American woman next to me started a conversation. We talked about my experience of learning English in the UK. More than beautiful, she was inspiring. I said how difficult it had been for me so far. Although I studied English before, it was not sufficient to make me fluent in the new language. Due to some problems that I had when I tried to express myself in the first days, I realized how much I needed to improve my language skills. I got disappointed with myself at that time. “One of the best ways to become fluent in English is by reading”, she said and completed: reading is crucial to learning languages. She explained to me all the benefits from this habit: vocabulary can be enriched and misspelling can be avoided. Besides, reading makes our knowledge more diverse. “Unfortunately, we live in an era that books are not that interesting for many children around the world”, she said. Currently, technology has taken the place of books. If people could see the benefits provided by reading, habits could be different. How could I never realize this before? In that bus, in that typical British weather day, my relation with books had changed. I bought my first English literature book there and after that, I got others. The most interesting thing about this event is that my English skills - and my world perspective - are so different from that day somewhere in Wales. Through a trip, we can live and create new stories to tell with people from different places and cultures. I have the same feeling with books: on each page, new stories are told. We immerse ourselves in new stories - even inside our homes – and we change our reality and world perspectives. In my opinion, reading is one of the most incredible ways to enhance our world. More than beautiful, it is inspiring.
