A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to visit Thailand, as an amateur traveler in Asia I did the corresponding research to understand and get to know the travel alternatives and attractions in the city of Bangkok. As a solo traveler, one of the key aspects to get the best of the trip was to socialize, so when I was having lunch in a restaurant near the Wat Pho I met a new U.S. friend named Jacob. We decided to spend the rest of the day knowing some temples and hanging around the city. At night we scheduled to go together to Chinatown, so once we had some walking and got familiarized with the surroundings (after a long touristic trip), the big question was made, where do we eat? As rookies in the city, we decided to check into Yelp for this purpose (great idea), based on the review rates of we decided that the best choice was only some minutes far from our current location. Since the decision was already made even dough, we saw some nice places in the way, the selection was supposed to be a great place in town to get some good Chinese food. To get to the place we had to go through a city market (totally alone in the night), we just continue following the instructions. A market in a Thailand night can be unbelievable we had some good experiences there, different odors, creepy accommodations, and some rats in our way (unbelievable right?). After a while walking in that alone, scary streets, a decision needed to be made, are we continuing the journey or are we going back? Continue was the option (we had already spent some time going there), finally, we arrived at the place (the only lights in that desolated street) it seemed like a family restaurant, Jacob expressed something funny, “This is our place”…, “Let´s jump in I replied”. Some tables were busy some of them did not, nobody was in charge of hosting activities, so we just continue walking, finally, after some minutes trying to understand how the dynamic in that place was happening a Chinese old man got approached to us, he was not able to speak English, and neither do us to speak Chinese. So, we tried to understand what they were trying to tell us, he called a Chinese young girl, who did not spoke English as well after some words they just took us to a big table (for 10 people almost) where a private dinner was going on with some Chinese folks. We weren´t able to understand anything about the service dynamic, suddenly they started serving soda and drinks to us, even if we were not interested in continuing with our dinner, we were there now with some services acquired. After some minutes a first dish arrived (a nice seafood soup) we didn’t understand everything at all since we were expecting a menu or something similar, (we just ate the soup since we were starving), a second plate was coming to a super big dish of blue crab in its way (OMG! Blue crab!) in that moment I said my new friend… Man, this is not going to be cheap! Lots of minutes were spent, and dishes kept coming and coming, after the sixth (fish, more crab, shrimps, and some other stuff in the table), finally, somebody approached, she was a really elegant Chinese woman (around ’60s) she was able to speak a little bit of English, so the first question she made was, How are you doing? Both of us expressed that confused… She just replied that If we had a reservation? we had to reply negatively… so we explained to her that we just arrived and were hosted in there. She was astonished since the service that we were getting is supposed to be reserved with some time in anticipation, then she showed us some videos and photographs of the different important people that have gone to her restaurant (she was the owner), after getting that explained she told us that the last dish was dessert, we had tons of food in the table so we just told her that we were skipping that, after that productive talk we decided to eat as much as we could before leaving, so the check moment was to be done when we saw the check we were astonished way more than we were considering, (the experience was worth every penny), Jacob explained to me that he wasn´t expecting to spend that huge amount of money that if I had some to lend, fortunately, I had enough money to get the check paid, leaving me with only 15 baht for the rest of the day… when we got out of the restaurant, we were having the best laughs ever and of course one of the best Chinese dinners I´ve had in my full life, so as said, great stories happen when you can follow your instincts.
