I have always been a dreamer, fighting to achieve my goals and having a positive mind in every situation, however you are never prepared for the unexpected and a simple mistake can cost you your life. "You could get robbed, something bad could happen to you, you're a woman." That's what my parents told me when I decided to cross the world alone - from Colombia to Norway - in search of the Northern Lights. It's not something you want to hear, but in a world like ours, where being a woman set us in a more vulnerable situation, I understood their concern. I had never been to Europe before and had never travelled alone, but on the first of March 2019, I set out on my adventure and arrived in Spain. I went through several countries until I reached the Netherlands, where I took a flight to Tromso, Norway. From the plane I could see the huge white snow covering the mountains as if it were something magical, my breath was speeding up as the plane landed, not from fear, but from the excitement of being there, in the arctic capital and more than 5,000 miles away from home, where we don’t have winter. It was one o'clock in the morning, the airport was small and cozy. I took a taxi to get to my Airbnb. When I arrived, there was a huge mountain of snow and the calm sea in front of the house, it was dark, no one in the street and no cars passed by, you could hear absolutely nothing but the wind and the snow falling. I went up the stairs of the house and knocked the door, but no one opened. The minutes kept passing and I keep knocking. I felt the cold freezing my lungs and my feet, and my body and mind began to react slower, but I kept knocking on the door with the weight of my body, since my hands didn't respond. No one would open the door. An hour had passed, I had no internet or way to communicate with someone, I was scared and walked away to find help, suddenly I saw a man about my age walking on the street. “Hello, can you please help me, I don’t know what to do.” I told him, I was desperate and I explained him my situation. He had just arrived from another city and he told me to come with him to his house to get warm myself up. I trusted him. It was such a beautiful little wooden house. He looked on the internet and my Airbnb wasn’t the one I was knocking on the door all this long. He put his boots on and walk me to the right place. When we got there, we went inside the house and there was nothing, it was a house under construction. I couldn't believe what was going on, so he offered me to stay on his couch while I found a place to stay, but I saw a hidden door and I opened it. A tall and very serious man came out and asked for my name, meanwhile the young man was waiting with me standing there. I had finally reached my Airbnb. “Thank you so much for your help.” I said, and I gave him a huge hug. He was surprised for the hug, I think maybe because in Norway they are not usually as affectionate and expressive as in Colombia, when you first meet someone. “Do you have WhatsApp? We could go together and see the city.” I told him. “Sure, we can exchange numbers, Oscar, that’s my name.” He said with a sweet smile. He was tall, had blond hair, green eyes and he was so kind. I gave him a second hug and said goodbye. I tried to write him a text message, but I probably saved his phone wrong and I could never find him again. I tried to look for him, but I never succeeded. He saved my life and, in the end, I managed to fulfill my dream of seeing the Northern Lights.
