I live to cook, eat and discover. Happily my childhood friends convinced me to join them on a culinary adventure aptly named Cook, Eat, Discover. Our headquarters for the week was a small town called Roccotederigghi in Tuscany We signed on for a week of cooking, eating and discovery. This spontaneous trip met all my expectations to Cook, Eat, Discover while exceeding all my expectations! We flew into Rome and boarded a train to where our hosts met us to transport us to our home away from home for the week - a wonderful extended stay apartment style hotel overlooking the Tuscan Hills. Equipped with a kitchen, we enjoyed making morning coffees in our French press, eating the fruits of the season and savoring the artisanal meats and cheeses. Each day whisked us away on a Discovery tour- to local vineyards, a Buffalo farm and a sustainable fishing venture. Each afternoon we had down time to explore our town or relax by the pool during an abnormal heat wave. Evenings would signal our reconvening to cook- first basic pastas, then stuffed, pizza doughs, risotto, and the quintessential Italian desserts of biscotti and tiramisu. Even while cooking, we were treated to amazing appertifs & scrumptious appetizers. As good as Cook Eat Discover was, our hosts are what made the trip a standout. Oli and Flo treated us like royalty even when we were singing for our supper. Each meal spent together had a surreal quality - sipping Prosecco from the highest point of old Roccotederigghi or eating our freshly made risotto al fresco in the historical square under the moonlight. A dream we just wanted to never end. Even though it did end, the memories of Cook, Eat, Discover under the intense Tuscan sun are burned into my sub conscience. I connected with local producers, growers, and families toiling to achieve the best fruits of their labors- people infused with a passion and enthusiasm for their crafts. an inspirational and personal journey way larger than the bowls of pasta we lapped up, and more intimate since every morsel that went into my mouth all week had been handmade with an appreciation of the bounty of the soil and crafted with unbridled respect and love.
