Western Europe. The first thing popping into your mind is Spain? In that case you should not forget the little country that is right next to it. Portugal. Whilst many think that it probably is part of Spain, it is a country that exists longer than Spain and most of the cork comes from there. For the ones that are actually familiar with the name Portugal, probably know it for the South coast Algarve with its endless beaches, Lisbon the capital that has three very well known landmarks, the statue of Rio de Janeiro in small, the San Francisco Bridge and an elevator designed by a student of Eiffel, as well as Porto for its wine. But is that really everything that the country has to offer? First of all it is important to separate the regions that each one is hiding its own treasures. The north with all the hills full of grapes, wine yards, rivers, ponds and tiny villages filled with fresh fruits and friendly portuguese. Also some natural reserves like Serra de Estrella that is hiding snow in the winter and a lake with a hole inside. A hole in a lake? Yes! That actually is one of the phenomens that you can encounter in this natural reserve. When moving in the direction of the south you can not forget to see the surfers paradise with the biggest waves in the world in the winter time hosting as well some major surf contests. Always wanted to see a castle in the middle of a river? A city still within the old castle walls? Or do you prefer a palace in red and yellow reaching for the sky next to the most western point of Europe? All of this you can find in the north until river Tagus splits the country and becomes flat. Tagus is the river that is flowing into the sea next to Lisbon and separates the land of the hills from the flat land Alentejo. Not only Porto in the north is well known for good wine that tastes very smooth, also Alentejo has a lot of different heavier wines. Also in the north we can encounter natural reserves, like Arrabida, where you can see dolphins accompanying fisherman boats going towards Setubal, the small city known for its traditional choco frito. Moving on towards the south along the coast you can find some sea food restaurants that will stay in you memory forever. If you decide to take the way through the inland along the boarder of Spain, a steak would be the right choice, enjoying the soft meat of cows living on the outside all year long. Once you have reached the south, Algarve or how locals like to call it "British Portugal" you will be able to see never ending beaches and a landscape that will steal your breath. You think we have reached the end? Well, we did not, but not many know. Portugal has two island groups that belong to the mainland. You are a fan of hiking, natural beauty, volcanoes, Ananas farms, flowers, milk fresh from a cow or lakes? I guess than the Azores islands as well as Madeira are the right fit for you before you even knew. Would like to know what else the western european country portugal is hiding? Come, visit and enjoy the welcoming culture of the portuguese.
