Its been a month since I got here, my hair is stiff from so much saltwater. Emilia, my best friend and I decided to spend the day in Pescaditos, the beach we like to go to. We had made some friends throughout the summer, they invited us to Marcuse’s house, it was walking from the beach. He was a hippie in his late 50’s, his house was a weird kinda bar-hotel, he sold cold Pacíficos and quinoa for 50 pesos. The couches smelled like weed and they seemed to be older than me. I was talking to a woman whose name I can't remember, she was telling me a couple of weeks ago, she swam with sharks. The first thing that came to my mind was “destiny”. Is there a better way to end the summer than doing this? Like many other people, I am terrified of this animal. But that's exactly why I want to do it. I want to prove my self that these predators that have 15 rows of huge teeth, 8 fins that give them a speed of up to 40 km per hour and have a highly developed sense of smell, don’t do anything. I'm not sure if its good or bad luck but we were able to schedule the swim with sharks for the next and last day in Cabo. We woke up early to arrive at the Marina, we arranged to see the guide there. It was time to leave, the ship began to move slowly, in the distance you could see the silhouette of the arch, the famous rock for which most people know Cabo. On the other side is El Medano, the beach where all the spring breakers go to get drunk and do everything they cant do in their own country. I am the only one in the boat who’s afraid and some Jaws scenes start to play in my head, but on this occasion, I am the protagonist. I begin to make stupid questions to the guide: They don’t do anything? Have you had an accident? What should I do if it comes to me? It is a long journey; these predators are in the open sea, so we have many nautical miles to travel. After two hours, the boat slows down and stops completely. The crew started to throw dead fish and their blood so the sharks would come to us. It didn’t seem like a good idea to me. The hours passed by and there were no fins in the sea, the sun was about to set, so this meant we had to leave pretty soon. The wait was so long that the anxiety of being afraid became in the anxiety of wanting to see these animals. We decided to jump in the water, even though there were no sharks. I was swimming with Emilia, and a couple of minutes after, the guide started making a noise, we turned around and there it was a shark. Everything I expected to feel, never crossed my mind. The fear disappeared, I was stunned by the beauty of this animal, he swam very fast but had subtle movements. I wasn't able to see the sharp teeth which Spielberg told us about. Sadly, it was time to leave, when I pulled my head out of the water there was a beautiful sunset. And what I thought it would be a horror movie, ended up being a tape with a happy ending. When I saw the other people’s faces I noticed we all had the same big smile. All of us wanted to talk at the same time, everything had been so amazing to be real. Even though it was a short time, it was totally worth it.
